Interior Crucifixion of the Will
The doctrine that true crucifixion consists not in the exterior nailing of hands and feet (which lasted only three hours) but in the crucifixion of all the particles of one’s being and the crucifixion of the human will in the Father’s Will across the whole life — Christ’s thirty hidden years at Nazareth enacted this interior will-crucifixion that the three-hour exterior passion only made publicly visible (Philippians 2:5-8: the whole-life self-emptying, with death on the cross as only the final expression; Hebrews 10:7: “I have come to do your will” as the whole-life mission; John 6:38: never doing his own will but the Father’s); Gethsemane (Luke 22:42) is the surface manifestation of what Nazareth enacted in hiddenness; the soul is called to follow this same whole-life pattern (Hebrews 5:8-9: learning obedience through suffering; 1 Peter 2:21: following Christ’s steps), and Christ himself declares nothing further can be asked once this point is reached.
