Prevenient-Actual Act Doctrine
The doctrine that DW operative life has two structurally complementary acts: (1) the prevenient act — the morning consecration by which the soul, at the day’s first rising, “fixes her will in Mine, and decides and confirms that she wants to live and operate only in my Volition,” anticipating all her acts and making them flow in the Will “as though in one single act” — which can be shadowed by cloud-causes (human ways, self-will, self-esteem, negligence) but governs the whole day, the divine Sun rising and Christ’s life remaining “duplicated in all of her acts” by its power; and (2) the actual act — each individual operative moment explicitly performed in the Will — which “is not subject to clouds; on the contrary, it has the virtue of dispelling the clouds, if there are any,” generating “many more suns, one more beautiful than the other, in which my Life is duplicated”; both mutually necessary: “the prevenient act gives the hand, disposes and forms the plane for the actual act; the actual act preserves and expands the plane of the prevenient” — the Christological prototype being Jesus’s morning solitary prayer before all activity (Mark 1:35), with the prevenient act as the daily enacted form of Romans 12:1’s total self-offering as living sacrifice, the “Life duplicated in all her acts” being the operative register of Galatians 2:20 (“Christ lives in me — that life I live in the flesh, I live by faith in the Son of God”), and the prevenient-actual dyad being the DW form of the James 2:17 faith-works unity (faith without works is dead; the prevenient disposition without the actual operative moment is the anticipatory act that the day’s execution must expand).
