Divine Asking Before Giving
The doctrine that God’s habitual mode of giving is preceded by his own act of asking — “It is my usual way to ask, whenever I want to give” — so that the creature’s petition is not the condition of divine generosity but rather the divinely-created space into which the gift enters by bilateral exchange (Matthew 7:7-8: the asking-economy disclosed from the creaturely side; Revelation 3:20: the divine knocking-and-waiting before the door is opened, so that entering and dining can occur; Romans 8:26-27: the Spirit interceding within God on behalf of the creature, ensuring the asking that unlocks giving is always underway), grounded in the three supreme creative acts that bracket human history — the FIAT calling the universe into being (Genesis 1:3), the Breath animating man (Genesis 2:7), and the omnipotent Blessing pronounced upon Mary before the Passion — each involving the creative Word engaging the created recipient; the Blessing’s most distinctive feature being its solar continuity (Psalm 19:4-6: the Sun following its course without diminishing heat or light as the type for the creative Word remaining in the act of blessing without ceasing; Hebrews 13:8: Jesus Christ the same yesterday today and forever as the ground of this continuity; Isaiah 55:11: the word going out and not returning void).
