Hierarchy of Wounds
The doctrine that not all evils wound equally in the divine assessment: attacks on the sacramental order (marriage as the sign of Christ’s union with the Church) exceed in gravity attacks on temporal life, because wars and martyrdom honor God through the witness of blood while the destruction of the sacramental sign produces only spiritual degradation — the Lord tolerates the former, names the latter “abominable and intolerable to Me.” (E)
