Expressed vs. Non-Expressed Will Doctrine
The doctrine establishing a systematic distinction between two modes of the Divine Will as known to the creature: (1) expressed Will — explicitly commanded by God; sin against it is graver in consequence and irreparable in degree; (2) non-expressed Will — the creature bears an obligation to seek discernment; if good is present it is God’s pure glory; evil is less grave and remedy is easier; the governing principle being that “not doing My Will is always an evil — more or less grave, depending on the knowledge of It that one possesses.” (E)
