Divine Disillusionment Pedagogy
The doctrine that God purposively embitters human satisfactions in order to redirect the soul’s constitutive irresistible force toward happiness back to its proper divine object — the creature is made for divine and eternal happiness (Ecclesiastes 3:11: eternity set in the human heart; Psalm 42:1-2: soul panting for God) and cannot be finally satisfied by created things; God therefore hedges the paths to human satisfaction (Hosea 2:6-7: thorns closing the paths so the beloved returns to the First Husband; Hebrews 12:10-11: discipline painful in the moment, purposive toward holiness) so that even holy things mixed with the human element cannot fully absorb nature (John 3:6; Romans 8:5-8: the flesh cannot receive spiritual things; 1 Corinthians 2:14: the natural man does not receive the things of God’s Spirit), executing the paradox that in taking away the nothing God gives the all (Philippians 3:7-8: counting everything as rubbish to gain Christ; Isaiah 55:1-2: laboring for what does not satisfy; 2 Corinthians 6:10: having nothing, possessing all things).
