16-1923-08-09 Biblical Resonance Analysis

Volume 16 — August 9, 1923 “The human will enwraps the creature with darkness; but one who lives in the Divine Volition, makes the Light and the Sun of the Divine Will arise.”

STAGE ONE — INDEPENDENT BIBLICAL IDENTIFICATION

The Human Will as Atmospheric Darkness — Progressive Blindness

“the human will has covered with clouds the whole atmosphere, in such a way that thick darkness hangs over all creatures, and almost all of them walk limping and groping. And every action they do without the connection of the Divine Will, intensifies this darkness and man becomes more blind, because the Light, the Sun of the human will, is the Divine Will. Without It, there is not light for the creature.”

Isaiah 60:2 — “For behold, darkness will cover the earth, and thick darkness the peoples; but the LORD will arise on you, and his glory shall be seen on you.” The verbal parallel is direct: “thick darkness covering the peoples” maps precisely onto the entry’s “thick darkness hangs over all creatures.” Isaiah’s prophecy positions this atmospheric darkness as the eschatological condition that the DW soul’s light-bearing is called to address, and the “LORD will arise” directly anticipates the DW soul’s rising above the cloud-cover to send light downward. Typological

Ephesians 4:17–18 — “This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that you no longer walk as the rest of the Gentiles also walk, in the futility of their mind, being darkened in their understanding, alienated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, because of the hardening of their hearts.” The mechanism of darkening — alienation from the life of God through the operation of the human will alone — is precisely what the entry describes. Every act without DW connection deepens the alienation and compounds the blindness. Direct doctrinal parallel

Romans 1:21 — “Because knowing God, they didn’t glorify him as God, and didn’t give thanks, but became vain in their reasoning, and their senseless heart was darkened.” The progressive darkening as a consequence of the human will acting without reference to God — each act of substituting human will for divine will compounds the blindness cumulatively, which is the specific dynamic the entry names: every act without DW connection “intensifies this darkness.” Direct doctrinal parallel

1 John 2:11 — “But he who hates his brother is in the darkness, and walks in the darkness, and doesn’t know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded his eyes.” Walking in darkness without knowing where one is going — the entry’s “limping and groping” — with the added precision that the darkness has already blinded the eyes: those enveloped in the human will’s atmosphere cannot perceive the blindness intensifying around them. Direct doctrinal parallel

John 1:4–5 — “In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness hasn’t overcome it.” The fundamental Johannine opposition between light and darkness provides the theological ground: the Divine Will is the light that constitutes the life of persons; the human will’s darkness is the failure of this life-light, and the entry’s central claim — “the Light, the Sun of the human will, is the Divine Will” — is the Luisian formulation of John 1:4. Direct doctrinal parallel

The DW Soul Rising Above Darkness — Flashes of Light Piercing the Clouds

“one who works, prays, walks, etc., in my Will, rises above this darkness, and as she works, prays, speaks, piercing these thick clouds, she sends flashes of Light over all the earth, such as to shake those who live down at the bottom of their will, preparing their souls to receive the Light, the Sun of the Divine Will.”

Matthew 5:14–16 — “You are the light of the world. A city located on a hill can’t be hidden. … let your light shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father who is in heaven.” The light-of-the-world calling is the scriptural correspondent to the DW soul’s light-bearing function: positioned above the darkness, not hidden, giving light to all the earth. The entry’s “flashes of light over all the earth” is the DW form of this mandate — not a steady lamp but penetrating flashes that pierce the cloud-layer and reach those below. Direct doctrinal parallel

Philippians 2:15 — “that you may become blameless and harmless, children of God without defect in the middle of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you are seen as lights in the world,” Those who live in the DW shine as lights precisely because they operate at a level above the atmospheric darkness that envelops the rest. The entry’s rising-above-and-piercing structure is the spatial elaboration of what Philippians 2:15 states as identity: the DW soul is light because it inhabits the level of the Divine Will rather than the cloud-cover layer of the human will. Direct doctrinal parallel

2 Corinthians 4:6 — “seeing it is God who said, “Light will shine out of darkness,” who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.” The creation-echo: God commanded light from darkness in the primordial act; the DW soul’s piercing of the atmospheric cloud-cover participates in this same act — the creature in whom God has shone is the medium through which that light breaks outward into the darkened atmosphere. Christological/Trinitarian

Isaiah 60:1 — “Arise, shine; for your light has come, and the LORD’s glory has risen on you!” The “arise, shine” command corresponds exactly to the DW soul rising above the darkness — ascending above the cloud-cover to where the divine light is direct — and then shining back downward in flashes. Typological

Daniel 12:3 — “Those who are wise will shine as the brightness of the expanse. Those who turn many to righteousness will shine like the stars forever and ever.” Shining like the brightness of the sky and turning many to righteousness — the DW soul’s function of sending flashes to shake and prepare other souls is the operative form of Daniel’s eschatological vision of the righteous as cosmic light-bearers who function from above the atmospheric level. Typological

Ephesians 5:8 — “For you were once darkness, but are now light in the Lord. Walk as children of light,” The transformed identity — light in the Lord — is the condition from which the entry’s light-bearing mission flows. Walking as children of light means operating at the level of the Divine Will rather than at the level of the cloud-cover below. Direct doctrinal parallel

The Purpose — Preparing for the Reign of the Divine Will

“I care so much that you live in my Will – that you may prepare a Heaven of Light which, sending continuous flashes of Light, may dispel this heaven of darkness that the human will has formed over their heads; in such a way that, possessing the Light of my Will, they may love It, and my Will, loved, may reign upon earth.”

Matthew 6:9–10 — “Pray like this: “‘Our Father in heaven, may your name be kept holy. Let your Kingdom come. Let your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.” The entry’s concluding purpose — that the DW may reign upon earth — is the explicit fulfillment of the Lord’s Prayer. The DW soul’s light-work is the preparation for this reign; the flashes that shake and dispose souls are the means by which the Fiat Voluntas Tua is brought about on earth. Direct doctrinal parallel

Luke 1:76–79 — “And you, child, will be called a prophet of the Most High; for you will go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways, to give knowledge of salvation to his people by the remission of their sins, because of the tender mercy of our God, by which the dawn from on high will visit us, to shine on those who sit in darkness and the shadow of death; to guide our feet into the way of peace.” The Benedictus’s preparatory function — giving light to those who sit in darkness as the preparation for the Lord’s coming — is typological of the DW soul’s function. The “sunrise from on high giving light to those in darkness” is the DW soul’s descending flashes; the reign of the DW on earth is the advent being prepared. Typological

Isaiah 9:2 — “The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light. The light has shined on those who lived in the land of the shadow of death.” The eschatological light shining on those in deep darkness — the DW soul’s flashes are the present, anticipatory form of this fulfillment, preparing souls to receive the fuller light of the DW reign. Typological

John 8:12 — “Again, therefore, Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. He who follows me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the light of life.” Christ as the light of the world — the entry’s “the Light, the Sun of the human will, is the Divine Will” is the Luisian specification of this Johannine declaration: the DW soul who rises above the darkness does so because it dwells in Christ’s own light, and from that level dispels the darkness below. Christological/Trinitarian

Romans 13:12 — “The night is far gone, and the day is near. Let’s therefore throw off the deeds of darkness, and let’s put on the armor of light.” The eschatological urgency — the night far gone, the day at hand — corresponds to the entry’s temporal sense: the preparation for the DW’s reign is not indefinitely deferred but actively underway through the DW souls’ light-work. Direct doctrinal parallel

STAGE TWO — COMPARISON WITH HOGAN’S COMMENTARY

CORRESPONDENCES

The entry’s structure is confirmed by Hogan as a deliberate balance: Jesus brings the soul “right down to earth” after the elevated teaching of August 5 to diagnose the human will’s darkness and explain the DW soul’s corrective function. Matthew 5:14–16 is identified by both as the governing correspondent for the DW soul’s light-of-the-world function. Ephesians 5:8 (Hogan) and Ephesians 4:17–18 (Stage One) are complementary: Hogan cites the positive identity (“you are light in the Lord”) while Stage One cites the mechanism of darkening (“they are darkened in their understanding, alienated from the life of God”). First John 1:7 (Hogan) and John 1:4–5 (Stage One) address the same Johannine walking-in-the-light principle from adjacent angles.

DEVIATIONS

Hogan cites John 9:40–41 for the deliberate-blindness dimension of the intensifying darkness: “If you were blind, I could heal you. But you say you can see, and therefore your sin remains.” The Pharisees who reject the light despite witnessing the sign of the man born blind are the type of conscious, chosen blindness that underlies the entry’s “almost all walk limping and groping.” Stage One addressed the same intensification through Romans 1:21 (hearts darkened through failure to honor God) and Ephesians 4:17–18 (darkening through alienation from God’s life). Hogan’s angle identifies the deliberate, culpable dimension — the refusal that is not ignorance but conscious rejection; Stage One’s passages identify the gradual, cumulative mechanism. Both dimensions are present in the entry and neither supersedes the other.

ADDITIONS — MINE

  • Isaiah 60:1–2 — the “thick darkness covering the peoples” verbal parallel and the “arise, shine” command
  • Romans 1:21 — the progressive darkening through failure to honor God
  • 1 John 2:11 — walking in darkness and not knowing where you are going; blindness self-reinforcing
  • Philippians 2:15 — shining as lights in the world from the elevated position above the darkened generation
  • Daniel 12:3 — the wise shining like the sky’s brightness as the eschatological light-bearing function
  • 2 Corinthians 4:6 — “God who said, let light shine out of darkness” as the creation-echo underlying the DW soul’s light-bearing
  • Luke 1:76–79 — the Benedictus’s preparatory function as typology for the DW soul preparing the advent of the DW reign
  • Isaiah 9:2 — the people who walked in darkness seeing a great light as the telos the preparation serves
  • Romans 13:12 — the night far gone / the day at hand eschatological urgency

ADDITIONS — HERS

John 9:40–41 — “If you were blind, I could heal you. But you say you can see, and therefore your sin remains.” The Pharisees’ rejection of the healing sign as the type of the deliberate, culpable blindness that the entry’s intensifying darkness implies. Hogan applies this to the present social context: “That’s what’s going on around us in society today. The blindness is almost on a daily basis now.”

John 8:12 [citation note] — Hogan introduces this as “Jesus had said at the beginning of John chapter 9, I think it’s in verse 2, that I am the light of the world and anyone who follows me will not be walking in darkness.” The full declaration — “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life” — is John 8:12; John 9:5 contains a partial parallel (“As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world”), but the full text with the following/darkness clause is John 8:12. This is the Christological grounding for the Divine Will as the sun of the human will.

1 John 1:7 — “But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.” Walking in the light as the DW soul’s mode — Hogan applies this specifically to the soul who “rises above this darkness” and operates in the DW.

Pastoral commentary — Hogan connects the entry to contemporary social diagnosis (“the blindness is almost on a daily basis now”) and applies the DW soul’s light-work as the contemplative response: “a small little bit of light gets out over the whole earth and diffuses darkness. And if more and more and more and more of us do it, we can diffuse the darkness altogether.” No additional citations, but the application grounds the entry’s atmospheric metaphor in present-day urgency.

STAGE TWO SYNTHESIS

The dominant scriptural tradition is Johannine light-theology (John 1:4–5; 8:12; 9:40–41; 1 John 1:7; 2:11), which provides both the diagnosis of the darkness and the ground of the DW soul’s light-bearing. The Isaianic eschatological vision (Isaiah 60:1–2; 9:2) provides the prophetic precedent for the thick darkness / arising light movement. The entry’s structure is a compressed cycle: diagnosis of condition (human will’s atmospheric darkness) → corrective agent (DW soul rising above and piercing) → telos (DW reigning on earth through love). Matthew 5:14–16 and Matthew 6:9–10 are the load-bearing New Testament anchors, connecting the light-of-the-world mandate to the Lord’s Prayer’s fulfillment. Hogan’s John 9:40–41 adds the culpability dimension — the blindness is not merely ignorance but conscious refusal — which deepens the entry’s “intensifying darkness” as a moral phenomenon, not merely an epistemic one.

Cross-Entry Synthesis

Volume 16 — August 9, 1923 “The human will enwraps the creature with darkness; but one who lives in the Divine Volition, makes the Light and the Sun of the Divine Will arise.”

The Human Will as Atmospheric Darkness — Progressive Blindness

Hogan frames this entry as a deliberate pedagogical balance after August 5’s elevated teaching: having shown the soul what it means to operate at the divine level, Jesus now diagnoses what the human will produces in contrast. The entry’s central diagnostic claim — “the Light, the Sun of the human will, is the Divine Will. Without It, there is not light for the creature” — is DWE-1 in its most exclusivist register: not merely a comparative preference but a constitutive necessity. Without the DW, there is literally no light; the human will alone produces only cloud-cover and progressive blindness.

The Johannine tradition provides the deepest scriptural grounding for this diagnosis. John 1:4–5 (“In him was life, and the life was the light of men”) establishes the constitutive equation: the life of persons is the light of persons, and that light is the divine life. The entry’s “the Light, the Sun of the human will, is the Divine Will” is the Luisian formulation of this equation. First John 2:11’s walker in darkness “who does not know where he is going” corresponds to the entry’s “limping and groping” — the self-reinforcing incapacity of the darkened will that cannot perceive its own blindness deepening.

Hogan adds the culpability dimension through John 9:40–41: the Pharisees who reject the healing sign — “If you were blind, I could heal you. But you say you can see, and therefore your sin remains” — are the type of deliberate, conscious blindness that underlies the entry’s “intensifies this darkness.” The darkening is not merely ignorance but cumulative refusal; each act without DW connection is a moral choice that compounds the blindness. Ephesians 4:17–18 (Stage One) and Romans 1:21 provide the Pauline mechanism: understanding darkened through alienation from God’s life; hearts darkened through failure to honor God. The two streams are complementary — Hogan’s John 9 names the culpability; Stage One’s Pauline passages name the mechanism. Isaiah 60:2’s “thick darkness covering the peoples” is the prophetic precedent for the global scope of the atmospheric darkness the entry describes.

The DW Soul Rising Above Darkness — Flashes of Light

The corrective agent is the DW soul who rises above the atmospheric cloud-cover and, from that elevated position, pierces downward with flashes of light. Both citation streams converge on Matthew 5:14–16 as the governing correspondent: “You are the light of the world… let your light shine before others.” The DW soul’s flashes are the operative form of this mandate — not a steady lamp concealed below the cloud-layer but penetrating light from above.

Hogan applies 1 John 1:7 (“if we walk in the light, as he is in the light”) to the rising movement: the DW soul who rises above the darkness walks in the same light as God. Ephesians 5:8 supplies the identity ground: “now you are light in the Lord” — the DW soul’s light-bearing is not a task performed but an identity inhabited. Stage One deepens this with Philippians 2:15 (shining as lights in a crooked generation from the elevated position) and 2 Corinthians 4:6 (God who commanded light from darkness has shone in our hearts — the DW soul’s piercing of the atmospheric darkness participates in the primordial creative act). Isaiah 60:1’s “Arise, shine” is the prophetic command whose spatial logic the entry enacts: the arising is the rising above the cloud-cover; the shining is the downward flashes. Daniel 12:3’s vision of the wise “shining like the brightness of the sky above” locates the DW soul’s function in the eschatological register: the righteous as cosmic light-bearers operating from the level of the divine light.

The specifically preparatory function of the flashes — “preparing their souls to receive the Light” — is the key distinction. The DW soul’s light-work does not directly produce reception but disposes souls for it: the flashes shake those below and open an orientation toward the light. This is the mechanism by which the contemplative DW action bears pastoral-missional fruit.

The Purpose — Preparing for the Reign of the Divine Will

The entry’s telos is explicit: “my Will, loved, may reign upon earth.” The light-work is not an end in itself but the means of preparation for the DW’s earthly reign. Matthew 6:9–10 — “your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven” — is the direct scriptural anchor: the Lord’s Prayer’s Fiat Voluntas Tua is the petition whose fulfillment the DW soul’s light-work is bringing about.

Luke 1:76–79 provides the typological structure: John the Baptist’s preparatory mission — “to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace” — is the forerunner pattern for the DW soul’s preparatory function. The “sunrise from on high” that the Benedictus announces in the Baptist’s preparatory role is the DW’s advent that the soul’s light-work is preparing. Isaiah 9:2 (“the people who walked in darkness have seen a great light”) and Romans 13:12 (“the night is far gone; the day is at hand”) place this preparation in eschatological urgency: the preparation is active and the threshold close.

The chain from preparation to love to reign is the entry’s governing logic: the flashes dispose souls to receive the DW light; receiving, they possess it; possessing, they love it; loving it, the DW reigns. Hogan’s pastoral application grounds this chain in the aggregate: “if more and more and more of us do it, we can diffuse the darkness altogether.” The DW soul’s contribution to the reign is exactly proportionate to its consistency in living above the atmospheric cloud-cover.

Synthesis

The dominant biblical imagination is Johannine light-theology (John 1:4–5; 8:12; 9:40–41; 1 John 1:7; 2:11) fused with Isaianic eschatological vision (Isaiah 60:1–2; 9:2), with Matthew 5:14–16 and Matthew 6:9–10 as the New Testament structural anchors. The entry presents a compressed movement — diagnosis, corrective agency, telos — in which the DW soul functions as the medium through which the divine light breaks through the atmospheric darkness that the accumulated human will has formed.

The most significant theological findings from the combined analysis are two. First: the DWE-1 exclusivity form reaches its most stark expression in the light register — “without It, there is not light for the creature” — naming the DW not as the superior source of light but as the only source. John 1:4–5’s equation of divine life and human light is the scriptural depth of this claim. Second: the Johannine culpability dimension (John 9:40–41, introduced by Hogan) and the Pauline mechanism dimension (Ephesians 4:17–18; Romans 1:21, developed in Stage One) together name the atmospheric darkness as both morally chosen and epistemically progressive — each act of refusal compounds the incapacity, and the incapacity deepens the refusal. This double movement gives the entry’s diagnosis of the present human condition its full theological weight: it is not merely a state of ignorance awaiting illumination but an accumulated moral condition requiring the preparatory shaking that only light from above can provide.

Observation Notes

16-1923-08-09

DWE-1 — light-exclusivity register (new form): “The Light, the Sun of the human will, is the Divine Will. Without It, there is not light for the creature.” This is DWE-1’s most starkly exclusivist form in the light register: not comparative preference but constitutive necessity. The DW is not merely the superior source of light but the only source; the human will’s darkness is the absence of the only light there is. Governing anchors: John 1:4–5; John 8:12; Ephesians 5:8.

PDW-1 — reign-preparation / light-work mechanism: The entry names the specific mechanism by which the DW’s earthly reign is being prepared: the DW soul rises above the atmospheric darkness, sends flashes that shake and dispose souls below, and the disposed souls receive the DW light, love it, and the DW reigns through their love. The preparatory function of DW souls as the means of the DW’s earthly reign is PDW-1 in its most operationally specific form. Governing anchors: Matthew 6:9–10; Luke 1:76–79; Matthew 5:14–16.
