13-1922-01-11 Biblical Resonance Analysis
Volume 13 — January 11, 1922 “The souls who live in the Divine Will will be for the Body of the Church like skin to the body, and will bring to all of Its members the circulation of Life.”
Stage One — Independent Biblical Identification
The Mystical Body and the Question of Place
“All the children of the Church are members of the Mystical Body, of which Jesus is the Head. What place will the souls who do the Will of God occupy in this Mystical Body?”
1 Corinthians 12:12–27 — “For as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, being many, are one body; so also is Christ. For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, whether bond or free; and were all given to drink into one Spirit. For the body is not one member, but many. If the foot would say, “Because I’m not the hand, I’m not part of the body,” it is not therefore not part of the body. If the ear would say, “Because I’m not the eye, I’m not part of the body,” it’s not therefore not part of the body. If the whole body were an eye, where would the hearing be? If the whole were hearing, where would the smelling be? But now God has set the members, each one of them, in the body, just as he desired. If they were all one member, where would the body be? But now they are many members, but one body. The eye can’t tell the hand, “I have no need for you,” or again the head to the feet, “I have no need for you.” No, much rather, those members of the body which seem to be weaker are necessary. Those parts of the body which we think to be less honorable, on those we bestow more abundant honor; and our unpresentable parts have more abundant modesty, while our presentable parts have no such need. But God composed the body together, giving more abundant honor to the inferior part, that there should be no division in the body, but that the members should have the same care for one another. When one member suffers, all the members suffer with it. When one member is honored, all the members rejoice with it. Now you are the body of Christ, and members individually.” The Pauline body-theology is the doctrinal foundation of the entire entry. Paul’s enumeration of differentiated members with differentiated functions — each necessary, none dispensable — is the framework within which the skin-and-circulation function of the DW souls is disclosed as a specific and irreplaceable bodily role. Direct doctrinal parallel
Ephesians 1:22–23 — “He put all things in subjection under his feet, and gave him to be head over all things for the assembly, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all.” Christ as Head filling the Body with his own fullness: the DW souls’ function of making all members grow to “proper stature” and rendering the Body “fully similar to my Head” is the operational mechanism by which the Ephesian Headship is enacted in the Church’s members. Direct doctrinal parallel
Colossians 1:18 — “He is the head of the body, the assembly, who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in all things he might have the preeminence.” The assertion of Christ’s supremacy as Head grounds the entry’s claim that the members must grow to “proper stature” or they deform the Body — the Head demands members proportionate to his own dignity. Direct doctrinal parallel
Colossians 2:19 — “and not holding firmly to the Head, from whom all the body, being supplied and knit together through the joints and ligaments, grows with God’s growth.” The physiological metaphor applied to the ecclesial body: the ligaments-and-sinews function maps onto the skin-and-circulation function of the DW souls. The growth of the body “as God causes it to grow” is precisely the function the DW souls perform — they are the structural medium through which God’s growth-gift reaches each member. Direct doctrinal parallel
The Skin-and-Circulation Function: DW Souls as Ecclesial Integument
“the souls who live, or will live in my Will will be for the Body of my Church like skin to the body. The body has internal skin and external skin, and because in the skin there is the blood circulation which gives life to the whole body, it is by virtue of this circulation that the members reach the proper stature.”
Romans 12:4–5 — “For even as we have many members in one body, and all the members don’t have the same function, so we, who are many, are one body in Christ, and individually members of one another,” The mutual belonging of all members — each member belonging to all others — is the structural logic underlying the skin-and-circulation image: the DW souls belong to all the other members in a unique way, precisely because they touch every member as the skin touches every part of the body. Direct doctrinal parallel
Ezekiel 37:4–6 — “Again he said to me, “Prophesy over these bones, and tell them, ‘You dry bones, hear the LORD’s word. The Lord GOD says to these bones: “Behold, I will cause breath to enter into you, and you will live. I will lay sinews on you, and will bring up flesh on you, and cover you with skin, and put breath in you, and you will live. Then you will know that I am the LORD.”’” The Ezekiel vision of the dry bones receiving sinews, flesh, and skin as the image of the restored Israel/Church: the DW souls performing the skin-function enact this Ezekielian restoration of the Body — covering the bones with the integument that makes life possible. Typological
John 15:1–5 — “I am the true vine, and my Father is the farmer. Every branch in me that doesn’t bear fruit, he takes away. Every branch that bears fruit, he prunes, that it may bear more fruit. You are already pruned clean because of the word which I have spoken to you. Remain in me, and I in you. As the branch can’t bear fruit by itself unless it remains in the vine, so neither can you, unless you remain in me. I am the vine. You are the branches. He who remains in me and I in him bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.” The abiding-in-Christ as the condition for life-circulation: the DW souls who are “dissolved in my Will” form the living medium through which the vine’s sap (the divine life) reaches every branch. The skin-and-circulation function is the structural concretion of the vine-branch abiding-relationship at the level of the entire Body. Typological
Hebrews 4:12 — “For the word of God is living and active, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and is able to discern the thoughts and intentions of the heart.” The divine penetrating action into “joints and marrow” — the interior of the body — corresponds to the internal-skin function: the DW souls as the internal integument covering all organs and enabling divine life to reach the Body’s most interior points. Affective/meditative
Healing the Wounded Members and Restoring the Body
“they will be the ones who will give the proper growth to the members which have not grown; who will heal the wounded members, and who will restore the freshness, the beauty, the splendor of the whole Mystical Body by their continuous living in my Will, rendering it fully similar to my Head”
Ephesians 4:12–16 — “for the perfecting of the saints, to the work of serving, to the building up of the body of Christ, until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a full grown man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ, that we may no longer be children, tossed back and forth and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, in craftiness, after the wiles of error; but speaking truth in love, we may grow up in all things into him who is the head, Christ, from whom all the body, being fitted and knit together through that which every joint supplies, according to the working in measure of each individual part, makes the body increase to the building up of itself in love.” The Pauline vision of the Body growing to “the whole measure of the fullness of Christ” — proper stature relative to the Head — is the structural equivalent of “rendering it fully similar to my Head.” The DW souls perform the equipping function that enables every member to attain this maturity. Direct doctrinal parallel
Colossians 1:24 — “Now I rejoice in my sufferings for your sake, and fill up on my part that which is lacking of the afflictions of Christ in my flesh for his body’s sake, which is the assembly,” Paul’s “filling up what is lacking in Christ’s afflictions for the Church” provides the deepest theological category for the DW souls’ healing function: the circulation of life they provide to wounded members is an extension of the same VSC-1 logic that undergirds the entire reparatory arc. Direct doctrinal parallel
Isaiah 61:1–3 — “The Lord GOD’s Spirit is on me, because the LORD has anointed me to preach good news to the humble. He has sent me to bind up the broken hearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and release to those who are bound, to proclaim the year of the LORD’s favor and the day of vengeance of our God, to comfort all who mourn, to provide for those who mourn in Zion, to give to them a garland for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness, that they may be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, that he may be glorified.” The prophetic mission — binding up, freeing, restoring beauty — maps precisely onto the DW souls’ functions: healing the wounded, giving proper growth to the stunted, restoring the “freshness, beauty, splendor” of the Body. The anointed Servant’s healing mission is the prototype; the DW souls are its ecclesial instantiation. Typological
Revelation 22:2 — “in the middle of its street. On this side of the river and on that was the tree of life, bearing twelve kinds of fruits, yielding its fruit every month. The leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.” The tree of life whose leaves heal all nations: the DW souls extending their acts “over all” members like a skin of healing is the temporal enactment of this eschatological image — the leaves of the tree that heal are the acts of those dissolved in the divine will. Typological
Habakkuk 1:13 — “You who have purer eyes than to see evil, and who cannot look on perversity, why do you tolerate those who deal treacherously and keep silent when the wicked swallows up the man who is more righteous than he,” The divine holiness as the ground of the requirement that the Body’s members grow to proper stature: the Head cannot sit in majesty over members who are “disgusting” to his holiness. The DW souls’ healing function serves not merely the Church’s welfare but the divine dignity — God’s eyes cannot rest upon a deformed Body. Direct doctrinal parallel
The End Cannot Come Without These Souls
“This is why the end of days cannot come if I do not have these souls who live as though dissolved in my Will — they interest Me more than anything. What impression would this Mystical Body make in the Celestial Jerusalem without them?”
Matthew 24:14 — “This Good News of the Kingdom will be preached in the whole world for a testimony to all the nations, and then the end will come.” The traditional condition for the end named in the Matthean eschatological discourse: the entry adds a deeper structural condition — not only the proclamation of the gospel but the presence of souls who live in the DW, making the Body’s members grow to proper stature, so that the Body presented in the Celestial Jerusalem is worthy of its Head. Direct doctrinal parallel
Revelation 19:7–8 — “Let’s rejoice and be exceedingly glad, and let’s give the glory to him. For the wedding of the Lamb has come, and his wife has made herself ready.” It was given to her that she would array herself in bright, pure, fine linen, for the fine linen is the righteous acts of the saints.” The eschatological readiness of the Bride: the DW souls’ function of restoring “freshness, beauty, splendor” to the Body is the preparatory work by which the Bride “makes herself ready” for the wedding of the Lamb. The entry’s question — “what impression would this Mystical Body make in the Celestial Jerusalem without them?” — is answered by this text: she would arrive unready. Direct doctrinal parallel
Ephesians 5:25–27 — “Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the assembly and gave himself up for her, that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, that he might present the assembly to himself gloriously, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but that she should be holy and without defect.” The Christological purpose of the Church’s perfection stated eschatologically: “without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish” is the standard of “proper stature fully similar to my Head” for which the DW souls work as skin-and-circulation. Direct doctrinal parallel
Romans 8:19 — “For the creation waits with eager expectation for the children of God to be revealed.” The eschatological condition connected to the manifestation of the DW souls: creation itself is waiting for the sons of God whose lives dissolved in the divine will constitute the Mystical Body’s fullness. Direct doctrinal parallel
Acts Extended Within the Immensity of the Will
“From now on, I will give to your acts done in my Will the virtue of circulation of Life for the whole Mystical Body of the Church. Just like the blood circulation in the human body, your acts, extended within the immensity of my Will, will extend over all and will cover these members like skin, giving them proper growth.”
Romans 5:5 — “and hope doesn’t disappoint us, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us.” The pouring of divine love into the heart as the ultimate content of the “circulation of life” — the DW soul’s acts circulate the divine love that the Holy Spirit has poured into the heart, distributing it through every member. Direct doctrinal parallel
1 Corinthians 12:13 — “For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, whether bond or free; and were all given to drink into one Spirit.” The one Spirit who forms the one Body is the spiritual equivalent of the one circulatory system: the DW souls’ acts become the medium through which the one Spirit’s life flows to every member. Direct doctrinal parallel
Colossians 3:14 — “Above all these things, walk in love, which is the bond of perfection.” Love as the “skin” of the virtues — the covering that holds all the body’s members in right relation. The DW souls performing the skin-function are enacting this Pauline love-principle at the level of the entire ecclesial body. Direct doctrinal parallel
Galatians 2:20 — “I have been crucified with Christ, and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me. That life which I now live in the flesh, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself up for me.” The Pauline dissolution into Christ — “no longer I, but Christ” — is the spiritual content of “living as though dissolved in my Will”: the DW soul’s acts extend through the Body because they are not merely human acts but acts animated by Christ’s own life. Direct doctrinal parallel
Truths as Founts: The Responsive Development
“How beautiful it is to see my truths in your heart as fount of Life immediately having the development and the effect for which they have communicated themselves! Therefore, correspond with Me, and as soon as I see one truth developed, I will make it an honor for Myself to make another fount of truth arise.”
James 1:22–25 — “But be doers of the word, and not only hearers, deluding your own selves. For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man looking at his natural face in a mirror; for he sees himself, and goes away, and immediately forgets what kind of man he was. But he who looks into the perfect law of freedom and continues, not being a hearer who forgets but a doer of the work, this man will be blessed in what he does.” The responsive development Luisa enacts — hearing the truth about the skin-and-circulation function and immediately praying it — is precisely the James 1:22–25 pattern of word-reception followed by practice. The divine satisfaction (“smiling with satisfaction”) corresponds to the blessing promised to the one who does the word. Direct doctrinal parallel
Matthew 13:23 — “What was sown on the good ground, this is he who hears the word and understands it, who most certainly bears fruit and produces, some one hundred times as much, some sixty, and some thirty.” The good soil that receives the seed and immediately produces fruit: the truth communicated becomes a “fount of Life” immediately having “development and effect” — this is the hundredfold-soil dynamic applied to the DW soul. Direct doctrinal parallel
John 14:21 — “One who has my commandments and keeps them, that person is one who loves me. One who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him, and will reveal myself to him.” The correspondence between responsive practice and further divine self-disclosure: “as soon as I see one truth developed, I will make it an honor for Myself to make another fount of truth arise” is the Johannine self-revelation-through-love-obedience pattern applied to the DW progressive-disclosure economy. Direct doctrinal parallel
Proverbs 4:18 — “But the path of the righteous is like the dawning light that shines more and more until the perfect day.” The progressive brightening of the righteous path as the image of the truth-fount economy: each truth developed opens the path to a further truth, and the light grows until the full light of the divine day. ADDITIONS — HERS
Saint Thérèse of Lisieux — “I am in the heart of the Church; I am love”: Hogan provides a hagiographical parallel — Thérèse’s discovery of her place in the Church as love — as a partial figure for the question Luisa poses. The implicit Scripture behind Thérèse’s formulation is 1 Corinthians 13 (without love, nothing); the DW souls’ place as skin-and-circulation is the deeper structural answer to the same question Thérèse answered in the affective register. Stage One did not identify this connection.
Ecclesiological pastoral application: Hogan explicitly names the DW souls’ function as “healing the church” and draws the practical conclusion — no need for criticism or chatter, simply get on with healing. The implicit scriptural anchor is 1 Corinthians 12:25–26 (members having equal concern for each other, no divisions). This pastoral specification is Hogan’s unique contribution.
Internal-skin anatomical detail: Hogan provides the specific anatomical insight that the body has an internal membrane covering all organs, whose illness causes death — this distinguishing internal from external skin enriches the physiological precision of the image. The theological application: the DW souls are not merely external integument but the vital interior membrane without which the whole organism collapses.
VIP / SPECIAL DESIGNATIONS
No VIP designation in Hogan’s commentary for this entry.
STAGE TWO SYNTHESIS
The combined findings converge on a single dominant tradition: Pauline body-theology developed through its major expressions (1 Corinthians 12, Romans 12, Ephesians 1/4/5, Colossians 1/2/3), with the OT preparation in Ezekiel 37 and the eschatological fulfillment in Revelation 19 / Revelation 22. Hogan’s anatomical and hagiographical contributions — the internal-skin detail, the Thérèse parallel, the pastoral application — enrich the entry without departing from the same doctrinal field. The load-bearing anchors are Ephesians 4:12–16 (proper stature as fullness of Christ), Colossians 1:24 (filling up what is lacking — VSC-1 ground), Ephesians 5:25–27 (presenting the Church without stain), and Revelation 19:7–8 (Bride making herself ready as the eschatological frame). James 1:22–25 and Matthew 13:23 are jointly load-bearing for the responsive-development conclusion.
Cross-Entry Synthesis
Volume 13 — January 11, 1922 “The souls who live in the Divine Will will be for the Body of the Church like skin to the body, and will bring to all of Its members the circulation of Life.”
The Mystical Body and the Question of Place
Luisa’s interior question — “what place will the souls who do the Will of God occupy in this Mystical Body?” — mirrors Thérèse of Lisieux’s own discovery of her place as love in the heart of the Church (Hogan). The Pauline body-theology (1 Corinthians 12:12–27; Romans 12:4–5) provides the structural framework: differentiated members with differentiated functions, each belonging to all others, each necessary. Ephesians 1:22–23 and Colossians 1:18 establish the standard against which the rotten and wounded members fall short: the Head claiming supremacy over members who must grow to a proportionate stature. Habakkuk 1:13 (God’s eyes too pure to look on evil) — identified by both Hogan and Stage One — names the divine stake: the deformed Body is not merely an ecclesial problem but an affront to the holiness of the Head who must “sit in full majesty” upon it.
The Skin-and-Circulation Function
The governing image is physiologically precise: the DW souls function as both external and internal skin, and as the blood-circulation system — covering, holding together, and distributing life to every member. Colossians 2:19 identifies the closest Pauline equivalent: the ligaments and sinews through which the body is “supported and held together” and “grows as God causes it to grow.” Ezekiel 37:4–6 (the dry bones receiving sinews, flesh, and skin) provides the OT typological ground — the Ezekielian restoration of the Body through covering and circulation is what the DW souls enact ecclesially. John 15:1–5 (vine-and-branches) gives the spiritual logic: the DW soul dissolved in the Will is the living medium through which the vine’s life reaches every branch. Hogan’s anatomical contribution deepens the parallel: the internal membrane covering all organs — whose failure is fatal — establishes that the DW souls are not peripheral decoration but the vital interior integument without which the ecclesial organism collapses.
Healing and Eschatological Readiness
The DW souls’ healing function finds its deepest theological ground in Colossians 1:24 (filling up what is lacking in Christ’s afflictions for the sake of the Body) — the VSC-1 reparatory logic extended to the ecclesial level. Isaiah 61:1–3 (binding up the brokenhearted, restoring beauty instead of ashes) provides the prophetic prototype; Revelation 22:2 (leaves of the tree of life healing the nations) the eschatological type. The eschatological urgency is explicit: the end cannot come without these souls. Matthew 24:14 names the traditional condition; the entry adds a structural condition — the readiness of the Body itself. Ephesians 5:25–27 (the Church presented radiant, without stain or wrinkle) and Revelation 19:7–8 (the Bride making herself ready) together establish what “proper stature fully similar to my Head” means eschatologically: the Bride must arrive at the wedding of the Lamb prepared, and the DW souls are the agents of that preparation.
Acts Extended Within the Immensity of the Will
The circulation metaphor reaches its operational precision in the promise: “your acts, extended within the immensity of my Will, will extend over all.” Romans 5:5 (love poured into hearts through the Spirit), 1 Corinthians 12:13 (one Spirit forming one Body), and Colossians 3:14 (love binding all in unity) together identify the content of what circulates: the divine love poured by the Spirit, the integrating force of the one Spirit, and the love that is the ecclesial skin. Galatians 2:20 (“no longer I, but Christ”) identifies the spiritual condition enabling the acts to extend universally: the DW soul’s dissolution means her acts are animated by Christ’s own life, and therefore capable of reaching every member as Christ himself reaches every member.
Truths as Founts: The Responsive Economy
The entry closes with a disclosure of the economy by which DW truths are communicated progressively. James 1:22–25 — identified by both streams — names the operative principle: hearing and doing, not hearing alone. Matthew 13:23 (good soil bearing hundredfold) gives the productive image: the truth received becomes a “fount of Life immediately having development and effect” precisely because the DW soul is the hundredfold-soil in which every seed bears fruit at once. John 14:21 (the one who keeps the commands receives further self-disclosure) provides the Johannine statement of the same economy: correspondence with the received truth is the condition for the next disclosure. This deepens the PHD-1 arc: the progressive communication of truths depends not only on the soul’s affective openness (January 5) and freedom from doubt (December 5) but on the enacted correspondence with what has already been given — each truth developed opens the channel for the next fount to arise.
Synthesis Conclusion
The dominant biblical imagination is the ecclesial-body tradition in its full Pauline development, with Ezekiel 37 providing the OT typological preparation and Revelation 19/22 the eschatological completion. The entry is the most structurally complete ecclesiological statement in Volume 13 — moving from the question of the DW souls’ place, through the physiological specificity of the skin-and-circulation function, to the eschatological claim that the end cannot come without them.
Three findings carry the greatest theological weight. First, Colossians 1:24 is the load-bearing Pauline ground for the DW souls’ healing function: filling up what is lacking in Christ’s afflictions for the Body is the doctrinal name for what the entry describes structurally — the VSC-1 reparatory logic applied to the entire ecclesial body rather than to individual members. Second, Ephesians 5:25–27 / Revelation 19:7–8 together establish that the DW souls’ work is the structural content of the Bride making herself ready — the eschatological presentation of the Church “without stain or wrinkle” is not guaranteed automatically but depends on the continuous circulation of life through every member that only the DW souls provide. Third, the James 1:22–25 / John 14:21 pairing establishes the progressive-disclosure economy’s operative principle: the next fount of truth arises not by gift alone but by the soul’s immediate enacted correspondence with the truth already received, making responsive practice the structural condition for further revelation.

13-1922-01-11
VSC-1 — new register: skin-and-circulation / ecclesial-integument form: “the souls who live, or will live in my Will will be for the Body of my Church like skin to the body… it is by virtue of this circulation that the members reach the proper stature.” New VSC-1 register with ecclesial scope: the DW souls as the Church’s skin and circulatory system — covering every member (external skin), protecting all interior organs (internal skin, per Hogan’s anatomical contribution), and distributing life to every cell. Colossians 1:24 is the load-bearing Pauline anchor (filling up what is lacking in Christ’s afflictions for the Body). This is the most structurally complete ecclesial-scope VSC-1 form in the corpus: the reparatory and substitutionary function now specified as the Church’s living integument, without which the Body deforms. Pending registration in unsequenced pool.
PDW-1 — new register: Bride-readiness / eschatological-Body-preparation form: “This is why the end of days cannot come if I do not have these souls who live as though dissolved in my Will — they interest Me more than anything. What impression would this Mystical Body make in the Celestial Jerusalem without them?” Most eschatologically concentrated PDW-1 statement in the corpus: the DW souls are the structural condition for the end itself — the eschatological presentation of the Bride (Ephesians 5:25–27; Revelation 19:7–8) depends on their continuous work. Deepens the November 26 third-centralization / eschatological-Glory-telos form by specifying the ecclesial mechanism: it is through the skin-and-circulation function that the Creator’s Glory is restored to the whole Body and the Bride made ready for the Celestial Jerusalem. Governing anchors added: Ephesians 5:25–27; Revelation 19:7–8; Matthew 24:14; Colossians 1:24.
PHD-1 — new register: enacted-correspondence / next-fount-condition form: “as soon as I see one truth developed, I will make it an honor for Myself to make another fount of truth arise.” The progressive communication of DW truths now disclosed as structurally conditioned on enacted correspondence with what has already been given. The December 5 form established the cognitive-receptivity condition (providential-doubt-production / pre-apologetic form); the January 5 form established the affective-receptivity condition (interior peace); this form establishes the enacted-correspondence condition: each truth must be enacted, not merely received, before the next fount arises. James 1:22–25 and John 14:21 are the governing anchors.
