06-1905-10-16 Biblical Resonance Analysis
Volume 6 — October 16, 1905 “The closer the soul draws to the love of God, the more she loses her own virtues.”
STAGE ONE — INDEPENDENT BIBLICAL IDENTIFICATION
I. The Fount of Every Good: Love as the Spiritual Summit
“the closer the soul comes to the end, so as to draw near the fount of every good, which is the true and perfect love of God in which everything will remain submerged and love alone will float, to be the engine of everything”
1 John 4:8 — “He who doesn’t love doesn’t know God, for God is love.” The fount of every good is God Himself; God is love — therefore approaching the fount of every good is approaching love in its absolute form. The entry’s “true and perfect love of God” is not a disposition toward God but the participation in what God is. Direct doctrinal parallel
Deuteronomy 6:4–5 — “Hear, Israel: The LORD is our God. The LORD is one. You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your might.” The Shema as the summit-law — total love of God with all three powers is the entry-point into the fount. Hogan supplies this as the governing anchor for the love-summit teaching. Direct doctrinal parallel
Matthew 22:37–40 — “Jesus said to him, “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the first and great commandment. A second likewise is this, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ The whole law and the prophets depend on these two commandments.” The entire Law hanging on love corresponds to the entry’s “love alone floats” — love is the essence from which all else derives its weight. Everything else can be submerged; love alone is the law’s irreducible content. Direct doctrinal parallel
1 Corinthians 13:8 — “Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will be done away with. Where there are various languages, they will cease. Where there is knowledge, it will be done away with.” The eschatological structure: everything is submerged — charisms, knowledge, individually perceived virtues — while love alone floats. The entry’s “love alone will float” is 1 Corinthians 13:8’s permanent-love enacted at the spiritual summit still on earth. Direct doctrinal parallel
Song of Songs 8:7 — “Many waters can’t quench love, neither can floods drown it. If a man would give all the wealth of his house for love, he would be utterly scorned.” Love floats when everything else is submerged precisely because floods cannot drown it — the Song names the very dynamic the entry images. Affective/meditative
II. Love Converting All Virtues Into Itself
“love converts them all into itself, keeping them at rest within itself like many noble princesses, working, itself alone, and giving life to all of them.”
Ephesians 3:16–19 — “that he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, that you may be strengthened with power through his Spirit in the inner person, that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith, to the end that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may be strengthened to comprehend with all the saints what is the width and length and height and depth, and to know Christ’s love which surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.” Hogan supplies this as the anchor for the love-conversion teaching. The love “surpassing knowledge” — the soul who has reached the love-summit is filled with all the fullness of God rather than analyzing her individual virtues; love has converted the fullness into itself. Direct doctrinal parallel
1 Corinthians 13:4–7 — “Love is patient and is kind. Love doesn’t envy. Love doesn’t brag, is not proud, doesn’t behave … truth; bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, and endures all things.” Love is patience, kindness, humility, endurance — not as separate virtues that love happens to produce but as what love actually is. The entry’s claim that love converts all virtues into itself is Paul’s anatomy: love is them in their highest form, not adjacent to them. Direct doctrinal parallel
1 Corinthians 14:1 — “Follow after love and earnestly desire spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy.” The primacy of love-pursuit above all individual gifts and virtues — Hogan supplies this citation. The entry’s losing awareness of individual virtues while pursuing love corresponds precisely: the pursuit of love is the single orientation that governs all the rest. Direct doctrinal parallel
Romans 13:10 — “Love doesn’t harm a neighbor. Love therefore is the fulfillment of the law.” The entire law fulfilled in love — the entry’s “love converts them all into itself” is this: love is not the abolition of the virtues but their fulfillment and highest form. All the specific laws (corresponding to specific virtues) find their completion when love encloses them. Direct doctrinal parallel
Colossians 3:14 — “Above all these things, walk in love, which is the bond of perfection.” Love as the binding agent “above all” — not one virtue among others but the one that encloses all and gives them their life. Direct doctrinal parallel
III. Virtues More Beautiful in Love Than in Perception
“while the soul does not perceive them, in love she finds them all, but more beautiful, more pure, more perfect, more ennobled; and if she does perceive them, it is a sign that they are separated from love.”
2 Corinthians 3:18 — “But we all, with unveiled face seeing the glory of the Lord as in a mirror, are transformed into the same image from glory to glory, even as from the Lord, the Spirit.” The transformation at the spiritual summit produces virtues more beautiful, pure, and perfect — the soul has been transformed into the image rather than consciously practicing toward it. The difference is the same as the entry’s two-soul distinction: one practices toward virtue (still in the transformation process); the other has been transformed into love (the virtues are enclosed). Direct doctrinal parallel
Philippians 1:9–11 — “This I pray, that your love may abound yet more and more in knowledge and all discernment, … filled with the fruits of righteousness which are through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God.” Love abounding more and more produces the fruit of righteousness more fully and more purely — the more perfect, ennobled virtues that the entry finds enclosed in love. Direct doctrinal parallel
1 John 4:12 — “No one has seen God at any time. If we love one another, God remains in us, and his love has been perfected in us.” Love perfected is the condition in which the virtues are more beautiful, pure, and perfect — the love’s perfection is the virtues’ ennoblement. Direct doctrinal parallel
IV. The Obedience Example: Love-Perception vs. Virtue-Perception
“Another then, obeys, not to obey that person, nor for other reasons; but knowing that God would be displeased by her disobedience, she looks at God in the one who commands her, and for love of Him she sacrifices everything, and obeys. In this, the soul does not perceive that she obeys, but only that she loves.”
John 14:15 — “If you love me, keep my commandments.” The obedience that flows from love is precisely this: keeping the commandment not to keep the commandment but to love. The second soul’s obedience is the Johannine form of command-keeping — its origin and content are the same thing, love. Direct doctrinal parallel
John 8:29 — “He who sent me is with me. The Father hasn’t left me alone, for I always do the things that are pleasing to him.” The obedience motivated entirely by the desire not to displease God — “knowing that God would be displeased by her disobedience” — is Christ’s own habitual orientation: always doing what pleases the Father, not to practice obedience but because love toward the Father takes no other form. Direct doctrinal parallel
Philippians 2:8 — “And being found in human form, he humbled himself, becoming obedient to the point of death, yes, the death of the cross.” Christ’s obedience as the root-model: He did not obey to practice the virtue of obedience but because the Father’s will was the form of His love. The second soul participates in this precisely. Direct doctrinal parallel
Galatians 5:6 — “For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision amounts to anything, but faith working through love.” The externally observable act (circumcision, compliance with a command) counts for nothing without the love-ground; the second soul’s obedience is “faith working through love” — the act and the love are inseparable. Direct doctrinal parallel
V. Anticipatory Heaven: Eternal Beatitude of Love Down Here
“the more you move forward, the sooner you will enjoy in advance, also down here, the eternal beatitude of sole and true love.”
John 17:3 — “This is eternal life, that they should know you, the only true God, and him whom you sent, Jesus Christ.” The eternal life — the beatitude of sole and true love — has already begun in the one who knows the Father and the Son. The “also down here” is the Johannine realized eschatology: eternal life is not merely future but present in love. Direct doctrinal parallel
Ephesians 1:13–14 — “In him you also, having heard the word of the truth, the Good News of your salvation—in whom, having also believed, you were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, who is a pledge of our inheritance, to the redemption of God’s own possession, to the praise of his glory.” The Spirit as the down payment (ἀρραβών) of the full inheritance — the anticipatory heaven on earth is this: the beatitude of love already received as down payment, its fullness still to come. Direct doctrinal parallel
1 Corinthians 13:12 — “For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part, but then I will know fully, even as I was also fully known.” The love-summit soul on earth still sees in the mirror, but the love she possesses is the same love that will be face-to-face — the anticipatory participation in what will be fully revealed. Direct doctrinal parallel
1 John 3:2 — “Beloved, now we are children of God. It is not yet revealed what we will be; but we know that when he is revealed, we will be like him, for we will see him just as he is.” The already-and-not-yet form of the love-summit’s anticipatory beatitude — “God’s children now,” but what we will be remains to be fully disclosed. Direct doctrinal parallel
STAGE TWO — COMPARISON WITH HOGAN’S COMMENTARY
CORRESPONDENCES
The entire structure of the entry is confirmed by Hogan sequentially. The love-as-engine principle (“the only thing that’s the issue then is love”) is confirmed. The virtues-enclosed-in-love principle (“patience would be drawn up into love — I’m not being patient, I’m just loving them”) is confirmed. The obedience example and its application to St. Thérèse of Lisieux is Hogan’s own extension. The anticipatory-heaven-on-earth conclusion is confirmed, with Hogan adding that the earthly soul can still merit (unlike the Blessed in Heaven whose journey is complete) and therefore can still grow greater.
DEVIATIONS
No citation-level deviations. Hogan’s citations (Ephesians 3:16–21; Deuteronomy 6:4–10; Matthew 22; 1 Corinthians 14:1) are all Stage One correspondences. Hogan’s “John 14:1” citation for the “rest to love only” movement is accepted (the verse’s “do not let your hearts be troubled” corresponds to the rest from struggling with individual virtues that love’s enclosure produces), though its connection is more thematic than textual.

ADDITIONS — HERS
Hogan’s most significant additions: (1) The Thérèse of Lisieux application — her identification of the second obedient soul’s form as “a very good summary of the life of St. Thérèse of Lisieux in the convent: all her obedience was love, everything she did for love.” This anchors the entry’s teaching in the recognized tradition of the Little Way. (2) The meriting-distinction: souls at the love-summit on earth can still merit, unlike the Blessed in Heaven whose journey is complete — and therefore can actually grow greater than the Blessed. (3) Hogan’s framing of the entry’s scope: “This is the triumph of love… the whole 36 volumes is Divine Will and Love” — positioning the entry as a doctrinal summary of the entire corpus.
Note — Late Hogan addition to October 12: The opening of Hogan’s October 16 commentary supplies “Ephesians 4:7 and Romans 8:20” as citations belonging to the October 12 entry (attentiveness/self-knowledge in the context of sin’s damage). These belong to the October 12 BRA as late Stage Two ADDITIONS — HERS and are noted here for the record.
VIP / SPECIAL DESIGNATIONS
None formally. Hogan does not use the VIP designation but calls the entry “the most beautiful summary of the journey of the spiritual life” and frames it as expressing the whole 36 volumes’ central thesis: “Divine Will and Love.”
STAGE TWO SYNTHESIS
The entry discloses the terminal state of LAN-1’s arc: at the spiritual summit, love has converted all virtues into itself, so that the soul no longer perceives the individual virtues but only love — and finds the virtues more perfect within love than she ever perceived them separately. The obedience example is the entry’s most pedagogically precise movement: the two souls distinguish the virtue-practice stage from the love-only stage by whether the soul perceives the virtue or only the love. Hogan’s Thérèse citation confirms this is a recognized spiritual trajectory, not a Luisian novelty. The entry is a doctrinal capstone for the volume’s VRC-1/UPI-1/DWE-1 sequence: virtues rooted in Christ’s Heart (VRC-1) → rooted sufficiently → converted into love → love alone perceived.
Cross-Entry Synthesis
Volume 6 — October 16, 1905 “The closer the soul draws to the love of God, the more she loses her own virtues.”
I. LAN-1’s Terminal State: Love Converting All Virtues into Itself
The entry is LAN-1’s (Love as God’s Very Nature) most structurally developed statement in the volume and arguably its terminal doctrinal form. Earlier LAN-1 developments established that God is love and therefore operates from love (May 18), that the divine will is the operating part of God who is love (May 18 synthesis), and that the third life of love (TLL-1, May 30) made all creaturely lives germinate within the Humanity. October 16 discloses the soul-side consequence of LAN-1’s logic at the spiritual summit: because God is love, the approach to God is the approach to love’s absoluteness, and at that absoluteness all individual virtues are submerged and love alone floats — because love is not one virtue among others but what all virtues ultimately are.
1 Corinthians 13:4–7 (Stage One) supplies the precise anatomy: “love is patient and kind… bears all things, endures all things” — love is not separate from these qualities but is them in their highest form. The soul who perceives that she is practicing patience has not yet arrived at the love-summit; the soul who perceives only love and finds patience enclosed within it has. This is 1 Corinthians 13’s teaching made into a diagnostic for spiritual altitude: perceived individual virtue = still in the journey; perceived love containing all virtues = arrived at the summit, if still meriting below.
Hogan’s framing confirms the doctrinal weight: “The whole 36 volumes is Divine Will and Love” — October 16 names the destination toward which the entire corpus is moving. DW-SEED-3 (the divine will as the sole point of sanctity, October 25, Volume 2) and the Volume 2 Summary Statement (“Divine will and love is the summary of the 36 volumes”) are here given their fullest explanatory form: the divine will is love, love is the divine will, and at the summit they are entirely identified.
II. VRC-1 at Its Terminal Form: The Virtue-to-Love Trajectory
The entry discloses VRC-1’s terminal form: virtues rooted in Christ’s Heart (VRC-1, August 25) are converted by love into love, becoming more beautiful, pure, and perfect in the process. The trajectory is: sympathy-virtues (VRC-1’s negative category) → virtues rooted in Christ’s Heart (VRC-1’s positive category) → virtues submerged in love, no longer perceptible as individual virtues (October 16’s terminal form). The three stages correspond to the journey’s phases: the beginning soul practices virtue for virtue’s sake (sympathy-virtues or virtue-acquisition stage); the advancing soul practices virtue from Christ-rootedness (VRC-1’s stability stage); the soul near the summit no longer perceives the virtue but only the love that has enclosed it.
The August 25 entry named the four Christological benchmarks (executioners, silent lamb, sweating blood yet praying) as the root-models against which sympathy-virtue is measured. October 16 names why Christ’s own obedience is the root-model: “He has not left me alone, for I always do the things that are pleasing to him” (John 8:29 — Stage One). Christ’s obedience was already love-only — He did not perceive that He was exercising obedience but only that He was loving the Father. VRC-1’s “rooted in Christ’s Heart” is, at its fullest, the soul arriving at Christ’s own mode of virtuous action: love-only, no virtue perceived separately.
III. The Two-Soul Obedience as UPI-1’s Fullest Form
The two-souls-of-obedience example is UPI-1 (upright intention as master-principle) in its most operationally concrete and most elevated form. Earlier UPI-1 developments named the origin-criterion (March 20: ek tou theou as ontological precision), the gaze-doctrine (May 20: attention as complementary register), the charism-consequence (July 20), and the luminous-architectural form (August 20: total intention as opened house). October 16 names UPI-1’s terminal state: the soul whose intention is so completely from God that she perceives only love and not the virtue she exercises. The origin has become so constitutive of the act that the act and the origin are no longer distinguishable — only love is perceived, and love is both the origin and the content.
John 14:15’s “if you love me you will keep my commandments” (Stage One) names the structure: the commandment-keeping and the love are not two separate events but one. The second obedient soul keeps the commandment not to keep the commandment but to love — UPI-1’s origin-principle at its most complete, where origin and act have collapsed into a single motion called love.
IV. TLL-1 and the Love-Engine: Convergence at the Summit
TLL-1 (third life of love, May 30) named love as a sui generis life-form within the Incarnation that “made all creaturely lives germinate within the Humanity” — love as the life-giving engine beneath all creaturely existence. October 16 names the soul-side experience of TLL-1 at the spiritual summit: “love converts them all into itself… working, itself alone, and giving life to all of them.” The entry’s “love as the engine of everything” and TLL-1’s love-as-life-giver are the same reality from two angles: TLL-1 names it from the Incarnation’s interior (love making all creaturely lives germinate); October 16 names it from the spiritual summit (love converting all virtues into itself and giving them life).
The “noble princesses” at rest within love correspond to TLL-1’s creaturely lives germinating within the Humanity — both images name the same containment structure: the particular (virtues, creaturely lives) at rest within the universal (love, the Humanity), receiving their life from what contains them.
V. The Anticipatory Heaven and HPC-1
“You will enjoy in advance, also down here, the eternal beatitude of sole and true love” is HPC-1’s (heavenly proportionality continuity) most elevated earthly form. HPC-1 has tracked proportional heavenly reward throughout the volume — what the soul accumulates through correspondence is the anticipation of what heaven will complete. October 16 names the highest form of this anticipation: the soul at the love-summit already experiences on earth what heaven is entirely about — “the eternal beatitude of sole and true love.” Hogan adds the meriting-distinction: the earthly soul can still merit (grow) while the Blessed cannot — making the love-summit on earth higher in potential than the Blessed, because potential growth remains. John 17:3’s “this is eternal life, that they know you” (Stage One) confirms the realized-eschatological dimension: eternal life has already begun in love, and the “also down here” is its current form.
Synthesis Conclusion
The dominant biblical imagination in this entry is the Johannine love-theology (1 John 4:8; John 14:15; John 8:29; John 17:3) combined with the Pauline love-anatomy (1 Corinthians 13:4–8; Romans 13:10; Colossians 3:14) and the Pauline eschatological-love framework (Ephesians 3:16–19 — Hogan; 1 Corinthians 13:12; Ephesians 1:13–14). The load-bearing scriptural traditions are 1 Corinthians 13:4–8 (love as all virtues in their highest form), 1 John 4:8 (God is love — the fount of every good), Ephesians 3:16–19 (rooted and grounded in love / filled with the fullness of God — Hogan), and John 8:29 (Christ’s love-only obedience as the root-model). The three most significant findings: (1) LAN-1 at its terminal doctrinal form — love converting all virtues into itself at the spiritual summit, so that only love is perceived and all virtues are found within it more perfect than they were perceived separately; (2) VRC-1 at its terminal form — the virtue-to-love trajectory completing: sympathy-virtues → Christ-rooted virtues → virtues submerged in love, no longer perceptible as individual; (3) the meriting-distinction from Hogan — the soul at the love-summit on earth can still merit and grow, making the earthly love-summit in potential higher than the Blessed who cannot merit further; the anticipatory beatitude is real but not yet exhausted.
Observation Notes
See this note in volume context →
06-1905-10-16
LAN-1 — terminal doctrinal form: At the spiritual summit, love converts all virtues into itself so that the soul perceives only love and no longer the individual virtues — but finds them enclosed within love more beautiful, pure, and perfect. The “love alone floats” image is LAN-1’s most structurally developed statement in the volume, confirming Hogan’s summary: “The whole 36 volumes is Divine Will and Love.” 1 Corinthians 13:4–8 governs the anatomy (love is all virtues in their highest form); Ephesians 3:16–19 governs the filling-form (Hogan).
VRC-1 — terminal form disclosed: The virtue-to-love trajectory completes: sympathy-virtues → Christ-rooted virtues (VRC-1) → virtues submerged in love (October 16). The two-soul obedience example is VRC-1’s Christ-rootedness at its fullest: love-only obedience corresponding to Christ’s own “always doing what pleases the Father” (John 8:29).
UPI-1 — terminal form: The two-obedient-souls example is UPI-1 at its most elevated: origin and act so completely identified in love that only love is perceived. John 14:15 and Galatians 5:6 are the governing anchors.
Hogan meriting-distinction: Souls at the love-summit on earth can still merit and grow; the Blessed in Heaven cannot. The earthly love-summit in potential exceeds the Blessed in growth-capacity. Forward monitoring for higher-volume developments.
Late Hogan addition to October 12 — Ephesians 4:7 and Romans 8:20: At the opening of the October 16 commentary Hogan supplies “Ephesians 4:7 and Romans 8:20” as late additions to the October 12 (self-knowledge / attentive vigilance) teaching. These belong to the October 12 BRA as Stage Two ADDITIONS — HERS, parallel to the September 4/Isaiah 55:11 pattern.
