04-1901-09-14 Biblical Resonance Analysis
Volume 4 — September 14, 1901 “The beginning and the end of our actions must be the love of God.”
STAGE ONE — Independent Biblical Identification
The September 14 entry (VIP per Hogan) is a meditation received by infused light rather than direct vision, with one concentrated doctrinal movement: the soul’s entry into God requires similarity to God who is pure love; this can be accomplished progressively during life to spare purgatory; the fire-and-wood image gives the mechanism — the love of God is the fire, the crosses and mortifications are the wood that feeds it, and the passions and inclinations are the smoke that reveals incomplete combustion. The sign of completion: the passions are pacified, and there is no more smoke. The result: dwelling in God even here below, paradise on earth. Processed as a single unit.
Entry into God Requires Similarity to God Who Is Pure Love
“in going out of the body, the soul enters into God; but since God is most pure love, only when the soul is a complex of love — then does she enter into God. In fact, God receives no one into Himself if she is not completely similar to Him, and on finding her similar, He receives her and shares all of His qualities with her.”
The entrance-condition is precisely stated: God receives only those who are completely similar to Him — and since God is most pure love, only the soul that is a complex of love can enter. The similarity is not ethical compliance but ontological conformation: the soul must have been transformed into love’s likeness, not merely its practitioner. Hogan notes: “the only baggage allowed into God is love.”
Hebrews 12:14 — “Follow after peace with all men, and the sanctification without which no man will see the Lord,” Hogan cites Hebrews 12:14 (implied by the GRC-1 arc and Hogan’s instruction to “put Hebrews 12:14 beside it”). Hōn chōris oudeis opsetai ton Kyrion — the holiness without which no one will see the Lord — is the entrance-condition’s canonical form. Direct doctrinal parallel
Revelation 21:27 — “There will in no way enter into it anything profane, or one who causes an abomination or a lie, but only those who are written in the Lamb’s book of life.” Hogan cites Revelation 21–22 for the New Jerusalem where those outside the divine will cannot enter. Ou mē eiselthē eis autēn pan koinon — nothing unclean enters — the absolute purity-condition for entry into the divine dwelling. Direct doctrinal parallel
1 John 3:2 — “Beloved, now we are children of God. It is not yet revealed what we will be; but we know that when he is revealed, we will be like him, for we will see him just as he is.” Homoioi autō esometha — we shall be like Him — the final entry into God is this likeness: the soul who has been made like Him through the fire-process sees Him and enters. Direct doctrinal parallel
1 John 4:8, 16 — “God is love. … who remains in love remains in God, and God remains in him.” Ho Theos agapē estin — the entrance-condition’s doctrinal ground: if God is love, and the soul must be similar to God to enter, then the soul must be a complex of love. Direct doctrinal parallel
Matthew 5:8 — “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.” Katharoi tē kardia ton Theon opsontai — the pure heart as the seeing-God condition — the September 14 entrance-condition in the Beatitude form: the purity of heart that the fire-process produces is what the pure-in-heart promise guarantees. Direct doctrinal parallel
The Fire-and-Wood Image: The Mechanism of Progressive Transformation
“the nourishment of fire is wood, and the sign to be sure that the wood is reduced to fire is that it no longer produces smoke. Now, the beginning and the end of all our actions must be the fire of the love of God; the wood which must nourish this fire is the crosses, the mortifications; the smoke that rises in the midst of wood and fire is the passions, the inclinations which often peep out.”
The image has formal structural precision:
- Fire = the love of God (beginning and end of all actions)
- Wood = crosses and mortifications (the fuel that feeds the fire)
- Smoke = passions and inclinations still peeping out (sign of incomplete combustion)
- Sign of completion = passions pacified, no more smoke, no more inclination toward what does not regard God
This is the August 5 mortification-as-sight-organ teaching given its process-description: the mortifications feed the fire of love; as they are consumed, the smoke (passions) diminishes; when the combustion is complete, the soul is pure fire — pure love — and can enter God without interruption.
Matthew 3:11–12 — “I indeed baptize you in water for repentance, but he who comes after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you in the Holy Spirit. His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will thoroughly cleanse his threshing floor. He will gather his wheat into the barn, but the chaff he will burn up with unquenchable fire.” Hogan cites Matthew 3:11–12. The baptisei en pneumati hagiō kai pyri — baptism in the Holy Spirit and fire — is the fire-of-love baptism: the cleansing fire that precedes and enables entry. Direct doctrinal parallel
Deuteronomy 4:24 — “For the LORD your God is a devouring fire, a jealous God.” ‘Ēl qannā’ — the consuming fire — the divine nature as fire is the OT foundation of the September 14 fire-image. The fire that the soul must become is the fire that God is. Direct doctrinal parallel
Hebrews 12:29 — “for our God is a consuming fire.” The NT restatement of Deuteronomy 4:24 — the same consuming-fire nature governs the entry-condition: the soul entering God must be conformed to the fire that God is. Direct doctrinal parallel
Malachi 3:2–3 — “But who can endure the day of his coming? And who will stand when he appears? For he is like a refiner’s fire, and like launderers’ soap; and he will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver, and he will purify the sons of Levi, and refine them as gold and silver; and they shall offer to the LORD offerings in righteousness.” The progressive-refinement process of the divine fire — the September 14 fire-and-wood image is the Malachi refining-fire at its most personally immediate: the soul herself is the one in whom the wood (crosses) feeds the fire (love) until the smoke (passions) ceases. Direct doctrinal parallel
1 Peter 1:7 — “that the proof of your faith, which is more precious than gold that perishes, even though it is tested by fire, may be found to result in praise, glory, and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ—” The dokimion hymōn tēs pisteōs… dia pyros — faith tested by fire — the crosses-as-wood are the testing-fire of 1 Peter: the wood consumed is the dross; what remains is the pure gold of the faith-made-love. Direct doctrinal parallel
Galatians 5:16–17 — “But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you won’t fulfill the lust of the flesh. For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, that you may not do the things that you desire.” The epithymia tēs sarkos — desires of the flesh — is the September 14 smoke: the passions and inclinations that still peep out are these fleshly desires that have not yet been fully consumed by the fire of love. Direct doctrinal parallel
Romans 8:13 — “For if you live after the flesh, you must die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.” Ei de Pneumati tas praxeis tou sōmatos thanatoute, zēsesthe — by the Spirit put to death the deeds of the body — the September 14 mortifications-as-wood feeding the fire is this putting-to-death-by-the-Spirit, with the fire of love as the Spirit’s instrument. Direct doctrinal parallel
The Result: Paradise on Earth — RP-5 Stated as the Completion
“we will pass freely, with no obstacle, to dwell inside our God, and we will come to enjoy, even here below, paradise in advance.”
The fire-completion produces RP-5 (heaven-on-earth) as its natural consequence. The COR-1 (circle of origin and return) arc is completed within life, not deferred to death: the soul who has been fully consumed into the fire of love dwells in God already — “just as we are inside our rooms here” — and enjoys paradise in advance. This is GRC-1’s peace-condition fulfilled: “only when they possess Me not only in part but completely — then do they find peace.”
2 Corinthians 3:18 — “But we all, with unveiled face seeing the glory of the Lord as in a mirror, are transformed into the same image from glory to glory, even as from the Lord, the Spirit.” Apo doxēs eis doxan metamorphoumetha — being transformed from glory to glory — the progressive transformation of the fire-process is this Pauline metamorphōsis: each degree of fire-consumption is one degree-of-glory transformation. Direct doctrinal parallel
John 17:24 — “Father, I desire that they also whom you have given me be with me where I am, that they may see my glory which you have given me, for you loved me before the foundation of the world.” The desire to be with Christ in His glory — the September 14 “we will pass freely to dwell inside our God” is the fulfillment of this Johannine desire. Direct doctrinal parallel
Revelation 3:4 — “Nevertheless you have a few names in Sardis that didn’t defile their garments. They will walk with me in white, for they are worthy.” The unsoiled garments and the walking-with-Christ — the soul who has no more smoke has no more soiling; the whiteness is the fire-completion’s visible sign. Four-stage fire process (cleanses → purifies → sanctifies → glorifies): Hogan’s most architecturally developed addition — the fire of love operates in four stages: cleansing (surface-level clearing, like weeding), purifying (pulling up roots so the same sins don’t recur), sanctifying (brought into union with God’s holy nature), and glorifying (the final transformation at death). This four-stage taxonomy gives the September 14 fire-and-wood image its sequential structure: the smoke is what cleansing has not yet purified; the passions are the roots still alive beneath the cleared surface.
-
“The only baggage allowed into God is love”: Hogan’s most memorable pastoral formulation — the entrance-condition stated as a luggage metaphor. All other baggage (problems, resentments, disordered passions) is inadmissible; love alone passes through the divine gate.
-
Two fires — heaven and hell as the same symbol’s opposite poles: Hogan names the paradox that fire images both heaven and hell: as a symbol of heaven it is love (cleanses, purifies, sanctifies, glorifies); as a symbol of hell it is hate (none of these effects — problems get worse, not better). The September 14 fire-of-love is specifically the heaven-fire; the choice is between accepting the purifying fire now or facing the consuming fire at judgment.
VIP / SPECIAL DESIGNATIONS
Hogan designates this entry as VIP explicitly: “I have a VIP on this one as well.”
STAGE TWO SYNTHESIS
September 14 is the most formally developed single mystical-contemplative meditation in the late Volume 4 sequence — received by infused light rather than direct vision, structured as a complete theology of progressive purification. Both citation streams identify Hebrews 12:14, Revelation 21–22, Matthew 3:11–12, and 1 John 3:2 as the governing anchors. Stage One adds the full fire-and-purification complex (Deut 4:24, Heb 12:29, Mal 3:2–3, 1 Pet 1:7, Rom 8:13) and the entrance-condition’s Johannine forms (1 John 4:8, 16; Matt 5:8).
Hogan’s four-stage fire process is the synthesis’s most architecturally developed addition: the smoke (passions) not yet purified corresponds to the roots not yet pulled up; the sign of completion (no more smoke) corresponds to the sanctifying stage where union with God has made the soul’s nature similar to His.
Cross-Entry Synthesis
Volume 4 — September 14, 1901 “The beginning and the end of our actions must be the love of God.”
STAGE THREE — Cross-Entry Synthesis
The Entrance-Condition: Similarity to the God Who Is Pure Love
The September 14 meditation begins with the most precisely stated entrance-condition in the corpus: “God receives no one into Himself if she is not completely similar to Him.” The similarity required is not ethical compliance but ontological conformation to the divine nature — and since God is most pure love (1 John 4:8, 16), the soul must be a complex of love (love in its many shades, as Hogan notes) to enter.
Hebrews 12:14 (chōris… oudeis opsetai ton Kyrion — without holiness no one will see the Lord) is the canonical form of the entrance-condition. Revelation 21:27 (ou mē eiselthē eis autēn pan koinon — nothing unclean enters) confirms the purity-requirement. 1 John 3:2 (homoioi autō esometha — we shall be like Him) names the eschatological form: the final entry is the final likeness-completion.
Matthew 5:8 (the pure in heart shall see God) gives the Beatitude form: the purity of heart that the fire-process produces is the condition of the divine-seeing. The September 14 meditation is this Beatitude’s mechanism disclosed: what makes the heart pure is the progressive consumption of the fire of love, fed by the wood of crosses and mortifications until the smoke of passions ceases.
Hogan’s “the only baggage allowed into God is love” is the synthesis’s most memorable single formulation. All other baggage — the passions, inclinations, disordered loves — is inadmissible. The fire-process is the pre-flight preparation: everything that is not love must be consumed before entry.
The Fire-and-Wood Image: The Most Complete Process-Description in Volume 4
The September 14 image is the most formally complete single process-description in Volume 4, giving the entire formation arc its most concrete single visual structure:
Fire = the love of God (beginning and end of all actions). Deuteronomy 4:24 and Hebrews 12:29 ground this: “our God is a consuming fire.” The fire the soul is to become is the fire that God is — the transformation is conformity to the divine nature at its most elemental expression.
Wood = crosses and mortifications (fuel that feeds the fire). Malachi 3:2–3 (the refiner’s fire that purifies the sons of Levi) and 1 Peter 1:7 (faith tested by fire, more precious than gold) give the wood its purpose: it is not destroyed meaninglessly but consumed productively, feeding the fire that transforms what remains into pure love. The August 5 mortification-as-sight-organ teaching receives its process-description here: mortification is not only the organ of sight but the fuel of the transformation.
Smoke = passions and inclinations (sign of incomplete combustion). Galatians 5:16–17 (the desires of the flesh against the Spirit) names the smoke doctrinally: these are not sins committed but the residual fleshly desires that have not yet been consumed. The smoke’s presence is not a condemnation but a diagnostic — it reveals where the fire has not yet fully consumed the wood.
Sign of completion = no more smoke (passions pacified, no inclination toward what does not regard God). Hogan’s four-stage process elaborates the completion’s approach: cleansing (surface-level clearing) → purifying (pulling up roots) → sanctifying (union with God’s nature) → glorifying (final transformation). The sign of completion (no more smoke) is the sanctifying stage completed: the soul’s nature has been made so similar to the divine nature that the passions no longer assert themselves against the love.
The PDW-1 (passions die in the divine will) arc from December 23 connects here: “before the Sanctity of my Will, passions do not dare to come forward, and lose life by themselves.” The September 14 fire-mechanism gives PDW-1 its fire-image form: the divine will / fire of love is what the passions cannot survive; their death is the combustion of the wood until no smoke remains.
2 Corinthians 3:18 (apo doxēs eis doxan — from glory to glory) names the progressive transformation’s Pauline form: each degree of fire-consumption is one degree-of-glory transformation. The process is not instantaneous but graduated — the wood is consumed incrementally, the smoke diminishes incrementally, until the completion.
The Result: COR-1 and RP-5 Completed Within Life
The entry’s most theologically concentrated conclusion: “we will pass freely, with no obstacle, to dwell inside our God, and we will come to enjoy, even here below, paradise in advance.”
The COR-1 (circle of origin and return) arc reaches its most explicit form here: the soul who has been fully consumed into the fire of love returns to the source — dwells in God — without waiting for death. “Just as we are inside our rooms here” is among the most audacious images in Volume 4: the soul’s dwelling in God is as ordinary and as natural as occupying one’s room. The fire-completion makes the entry-condition permanent; the entry is therefore available in the present.
RP-5 (heaven-on-earth) is confirmed as the consequence of the fire-completion: “paradise in advance.” The April 19 GRC-1 peace-condition (only when they possess Me not only in part but completely — then do they find peace) is fulfilled by the fire-process: complete possession, complete peace, paradise on earth.
The connection to the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross (September 14 is the traditional feast) is not named in the text but theologically coherent: the cross is the supreme wood that fed the fire of divine love in Christ’s Passion; September 14’s entry is that the crosses and mortifications of the soul’s life are the continuation of the same fire-feeding, in the same economy of love that the Cross inaugurated.
Synthesis Conclusion
The dominant biblical imagination is the fire-and-purification tradition: Deuteronomy 4:24 / Hebrews 12:29 (God is a consuming fire) as the identity-ground; Matthew 3:11–12 (baptism by the Holy Spirit and fire) as the entry-form; Malachi 3:2–3 (the refiner’s fire) and 1 Peter 1:7 (faith tested by fire) as the progressive-purification forms; Hebrews 12:14 (holiness without which no one sees the Lord) and Revelation 21:27 (nothing unclean enters) as the entrance-condition anchors.
The three findings of most theological significance from the combined analysis are: (1) The entrance-condition as ontological conformation — similarity to God who is pure love is not ethical compliance but the transformation of the soul’s very nature into a complex of love, which the fire-process achieves; (2) The fire-and-wood image as the most formally complete process-description in Volume 4 — giving the entire formation arc its most concrete visual structure, with fire, wood, smoke, and the sign of completion providing an observable diagnostic for where one is in the transformation; (3) The result as COR-1 and RP-5 completed within life — “we will come to enjoy, even here below, paradise in advance” is the most explicit statement of the heaven-on-earth anticipated completion achievable within earthly life through the fire-process.

04-1901-09-14
VIP — Hogan explicit designation: “I have a VIP on this one as well.” The VIP content covers the entire meditation: the entrance-condition (only the soul who is a complex of love can enter God), the fire-and-wood mechanism (love is the fire, crosses are the wood, passions are the smoke, no-more-smoke is the completion-sign), and the result (dwelling in God and paradise on earth even here below).
Fire-and-wood image — most complete process-description in Volume 4: September 14 gives the entire formation arc its most formally complete single visual structure: fire (love of God) + wood (crosses and mortifications) → smoke (passions and inclinations, sign of incomplete combustion) → completion-sign (no more smoke, passions pacified). Hebrews 12:29 (“our God is a consuming fire”) and Malachi 3:2–3 (the refiner’s fire) are the canonical anchors. Hogan’s four-stage elaboration: cleansing → purifying → sanctifying → glorifying. PDW-1 (passions die in the divine will, December 23) receives its fire-image form. RP-5 and COR-1 confirmed as the fire-completion’s result: “we will come to enjoy, even here below, paradise in advance.”
