04-1902-05-16 Biblical Resonance Analysis
Volume 4 — May 16, 1902 “Two sublime states.”
Stage One — Independent Biblical Identification
The Soul Completely Filled with God — Powers Chained and Inoperative
“I felt myself completely filled with God as if I were inundated, in such a way that the powers of my soul remained as though chained and inoperative; they just watched.”
Psalm 131:1–2 (translation pending) — “My heart is not lifted up; my eyes are not raised too high… but I have calmed and quieted my soul, like a weaned child with its mother; like a weaned child is my soul within me.” Hogan’s citation for the idle/inoperative state: the quieted soul resting in pure receptivity, all its faculties at rest in the divine. Affective/meditative
Ezekiel 1:28 — “As the appearance of the rainbow that is in the cloud in the day of rain, so was the appearance of the brightness all around. This was the appearance of the likeness of the LORD’s glory. When I saw it, I fell on my face, and I heard a voice of one that spoke.” The response to the overwhelming divine presence: the complete suspension of normal creaturely operating. The prophet falls on his face — the faculties are not working but receiving. Typological
Isaiah 6:1–5 (paraphrase) — the throne-vision in which Isaiah sees the LORD and is undone — “Woe is me! For I am lost.” The complete filling-with-divine-presence that leaves the prophet unable to act, only to receive the burning coal. Typological
Revelation 1:17 — “When I saw him, I fell at his feet like a dead man. He laid his right hand on me, saying, “Don’t be afraid. I am the first and the last,” The overwhelming divine presence producing the death-like inoperative state — John’s powers chained before the risen Christ is the apocalyptic form of what Luisa experiences in the complete filling. Direct doctrinal parallel
2 Corinthians 12:2–4 — “I know a man in Christ who was caught up into the third heaven fourteen years ago—whether in the body, I don’t know, or whether out of the body, I don’t know; God knows. I know such a man (whether in the body, or outside of the body, I don’t know; God knows), how he was caught up into Paradise and heard unspeakable words, which it is not lawful for a man to utter.” The state where the normal faculties are suspended and one is taken up entirely — Paul’s third-heaven experience is the Pauline account of the complete-filling/inoperative state. Direct doctrinal parallel
Colossians 3:3 — “For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.” The hidden life in God — the powers chained and just watching are the faculties of the “dead and hidden” soul whose life is now Christ’s, not her own active operation. Direct doctrinal parallel
State One — The Soul Dissolved in God, Remaining Idle
“Sometimes I fill the soul with Myself so much, that dissolving in Me, the soul remains as though idle.”
1 Corinthians 13:12 — “For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part, but then I will know fully, even as I was also fully known.” The total-filling is the eschatological face-to-face anticipated in mystical experience — the soul fully known and fully knowing, the knowing so complete that active striving is suspended. Direct doctrinal parallel
Song of Songs 2:6 / 8:3 (translation pending) — “His left hand is under my head, and his right hand embraces me.” The bridal embrace that produces the restful idleness — the beloved held so completely in the embrace that she has no need to move toward the Beloved; she is already in his arms. Affective/meditative
Ephesians 3:19 — “and to know Christ’s love which surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.” The fullness of God filling the soul — the total-filling of May 16 is Ephesians 3:19 enacted: the prayer for fullness fulfilled, the filling so complete that the soul dissolves in what fills her. Direct doctrinal parallel
Acts 2:4 — “They were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other languages, as the Spirit gave them the ability to speak.” The Pentecost-filling that overwhelmed and activated — but the May 16 form is the overwhelm-without-immediate-action: the filling so total that the soul rests in what has filled her before any activity proceeds. Direct doctrinal parallel
Psalm 36:8 — “They shall be abundantly satisfied with the abundance of your house. You will make them drink of the river of your pleasures.” The drinking-to-satiety at the divine river — the soul inundated in God is the one drinking deeply from the river of delights, her faculties suspended in the abundance. Affective/meditative
State Two — Soul Trafficking in Acts Before the Divine Presence
“Other times I leave a few parts empty within her, and then the soul, before my presence, traffics in an admirable way, bursting into acts of praise, of thanksgiving, of love, of reparation and the like, in such a way as to fill these voids which I leave in her.”
Revelation 4:8–11 (paraphrase) — the living creatures and elders before the throne: “day and night they never cease to say, ‘Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord God Almighty’… And the twenty-four elders fall down before him who is seated on the throne and worship him… saying, ‘Worthy are you, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power.‘” The continuous acts of praise, adoration, and thanksgiving before the divine presence — the soul trafficking in acts is doing on earth what the heavenly court does continuously before the throne. Direct doctrinal parallel
Hebrews 13:15 — “Through him, then, let’s offer up a sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of lips which proclaim allegiance to his name.” The continual offering of the praise-sacrifice — the soul trafficking in acts is offering the sacrifice of praise that Hebrews mandates as continuous. Direct doctrinal parallel
March 27’s justice-catalog — the eight forms of justice (loving, praising, glorifying, thanking, blessing, repairing, adoring) are precisely what the soul “bursting into acts” is doing: fulfilling the JSA-1 justice-rights in their active, trafficking form. The partial-filling state (State Two) is the justice-rendering state; the total-filling state (State One) is the justice’s suspension in dissolution. Direct doctrinal parallel
Romans 8:26–27 — “In the same way, the Spirit also helps our weaknesses, for we don’t know how to pray as we ought. But the Spirit himself makes intercession for us with groanings which can’t be uttered. He who searches the hearts knows what is on the Spirit’s mind, because he makes intercession for the saints according to God.” The Spirit’s intercession activating when the soul traffics — when the divine leaves a few parts empty, the Spirit fills those parts with the groaning-intercession that the soul then voices as acts of praise, thanksgiving, love, and reparation. Direct doctrinal parallel
Psalm 103:1–2 — “By David. Praise the LORD, my soul! All that is within me, praise his holy name! Praise the LORD, my soul, and don’t forget all his benefits,” The soul’s active trafficking in blessing and not-forgetting before the divine presence — the active state’s Psalmic form: the soul summoning all her faculties into the burst of active praise. Affective/meditative
Colossians 3:16 — “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly; in all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another with psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your heart to the Lord.” The richly-dwelling Word that overflows into the soul’s active thanksgiving and praise — when the Word leaves a few parts empty, those parts erupt in the active forms Colossians 3:16 names. Direct doctrinal parallel
Both States Sublime — Mutual Complementarity
“However, these two states are both sublime and hold each other’s hand.”
1 Corinthians 12:4–7 — “Now there are various kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit. There are various kinds of service, and the same Lord. There are various kinds of workings, but the same God who works all things in all. But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the profit of all.” The same Spirit operating through different modes — the idle dissolution and the active trafficking are “varieties of activities” produced by the same operative divine. Direct doctrinal parallel
John 15:4–5 — “Remain in me, and I in you. As the branch can’t bear fruit by itself unless it remains in the vine, so neither can you, unless you remain in me. I am the vine. You are the branches. He who remains in me and I in him bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.” The mutual-abiding that produces fruit — the two states are two forms of the same abiding: the total-filling is the total abiding in its receptive form; the partial-filling is the abiding in its active-fruit-bearing form. Direct doctrinal parallel
PCO-1 connection (paraphrase) — the proportional-communication law (March 23): total occupation → total communication; the partial-filling State Two is where PCO-1’s partial-occupation / partial-communication operates — the divine intentionally leaves partial space so the creaturely active participation can fill it. The divine’s “leaving a few parts empty” is a creative choice, not a deficiency — it is the PCO-1 economy operating in the active mode. Direct doctrinal parallel
Ecclesiastes 3:1 — “For everything there is a season, and a time for every purpose under heaven:” The two states as two seasons — the idle-dissolving season and the active-trafficking season — each with its proper time and character. Affective/meditative
Stage Two — Comparison with Hogan’s Commentary
CORRESPONDENCES
Both identified Song of Songs 5:6 / 3:4 register (the clasping that won’t let go) for the entry’s opening action. Both identified Psalm 131 as the governing anchor for the inoperative/idle state. Both recognized the two states as “two aspects of the same mystery” — Hogan’s pastoral formulation; Stage One’s theological form is the PCO-1 economy. Both recognized DW-SEED-2 / JSA-1 justice-catalog as the background for the active-trafficking state.
DEVIATIONS
Stage One identified 2 Corinthians 12:2–4 (Paul’s third-heaven inoperative state) as the Pauline precedent for State One. Hogan does not cite this; she uses the sponge-in-water analogy instead (the soul filled like a sponge). Stage One’s 2 Corinthians 12:2–4 supplies the scriptural precedent; Hogan’s analogy supplies the most accessible image.
Stage One identified Revelation 4:8–11 (the continuous praise before the throne) as the governing image for State Two’s active trafficking. Hogan does not develop this connection, staying with the pastoral observation that “whether he takes over completely or leaves a little bit for us to do” are two aspects of the same mystery. Stage One’s Revelation 4 gives the active state its heavenly-liturgical context.

ADDITIONS — HERS
-
Song of Songs 5:6 — Hogan cites for the clasping: the soul who seeks and holds, and will not let go. Stage One confirms.
-
Psalm 131 — Hogan’s primary citation for the inoperative/idle state: “my soul is like a weaned child with its mother.” Stage One confirms as the governing anchor.
-
Sponge-in-water analogy — Hogan’s image for the total-filling: the soul completely filled like a sponge submerged in water. This analogy has appeared earlier in Volume 4 (FHC for February 19 uses the same image) and is Hogan’s consistent pastoral image for the PCO-1 total-occupation form. The implicit scriptural ground: Psalm 36:8 (the river of delights), Ephesians 3:19 (filled with all the fullness).
-
The three powers of the soul — Hogan explicitly identifies “the intellect, memory, and will” as the faculties that remain chained and inoperative. This is the Thomistic / Augustinian faculty-psychology applied to the contemplative experience. The May 9, Volume 3 entry (faculty-level articulation — will → Father, intellect → Son, memory → Spirit) is the DW-SEED-1 background.
VIP / SPECIAL DESIGNATIONS
No VIP designation. Hogan does not use elevated language for this entry.
STAGE TWO SYNTHESIS
May 16 is the most contemplative-theoretical single entry in Volume 4’s spring-1902 sequence — a pure teaching on the two forms of mystical union without any intercessory, prophetic, or formative content. The combined findings center on three scriptural pillars: Psalm 131 / 2 Corinthians 12:2–4 / Colossians 3:3 for State One (the dissolved-in-God idle state); Revelation 4:8–11 / JSA-1 / Hebrews 13:15 for State Two (the active-trafficking state); and 1 Corinthians 12:4–7 / PCO-1 for the two states’ mutual complementarity. The entry is the most formally systematic statement of the contemplative/active alternation in the corpus, and the only entry that names the two states as explicitly equivalent in dignity (“both sublime”).
Cross-Entry Synthesis
Volume 4 — May 16, 1902 “Two sublime states.”
State One — Dissolved in God, Faculties Idle
“Sometimes I fill the soul with Myself so much, that dissolving in Me, the soul remains as though idle.”
Hogan cites Psalm 131 as the governing anchor: “my soul is like a weaned child with its mother.” The weaned child past craving, resting in pure presence — the faculties not working but simply being — is Psalm 131’s contemplative image of what May 16 calls the idle state. The quieting is total: intellect, memory, and will (the three powers Hogan identifies) are all chained and just watching. They are not absent — they watch — but their active operation is suspended by the completeness of the filling.
2 Corinthians 12:2–4 (Paul’s third-heaven experience — “whether in the body or out of the body I do not know, God knows”) is the Pauline precedent: the state in which normal creaturely operations are suspended and the soul is taken up entirely. Revelation 1:17 (falling as dead before the risen Christ), Isaiah 6:1–5 (undone at the throne-vision), and Ezekiel 1:28 (falling on the face at the glory) are the prophetic and apostolic typological forms — the complete-filling that suspends all creaturely operation is a consistent biblical pattern in the face of the divine presence at its most overwhelming.
The sponge-in-water analogy Hogan supplies captures the complete-filling’s mechanics: the sponge submerged in water is saturated at every point, with no dry space left for its own action. Ephesians 3:19 (filled with all the fullness of God) is its Pauline doctrinal form: the prayer for fullness fulfilled in its most complete experiential instance.
PCO-1 (proportional-communication-to-occupation, March 23) governs the total-filling: when the soul’s interior is occupied with God alone (total occupation), God communicates all of himself (total communication). State One is PCO-1’s total-communication form made experientially concrete — the soul’s complete occupation produces the complete divine self-communication, which fills to the point of dissolution.
Colossians 3:3 provides the theological description of what this state is: “your life is hidden with Christ in God.” The hidden life in God — faculties chained, soul dissolved — is precisely what the total-filling produces: the soul’s life is no longer visible as the soul’s own active operation but is hidden within the divine life that has filled her.
State Two — The Soul Trafficking in Acts of Praise
“Other times I leave a few parts empty within her, and then the soul, before my presence, traffics in an admirable way, bursting into acts of praise, of thanksgiving, of love, of reparation and the like.”
State Two is the active-participatory form of the divine-creaturely exchange. The divine intentionally leaves partial space — not as an oversight or a lesser gift but as a creative choice that creates room for the soul’s active co-participation. The “trafficking in an admirable way” names the soul’s active filling of the voids — the creaturely contribution to the divine-creaturely economy.
Revelation 4:8–11 is the governing celestial image: the living creatures and elders before the throne, never ceasing to say “Holy, holy, holy” and to cast their crowns, ascribing glory and honor and power to the Creator. State Two is what the heavenly court does continuously: the soul trafficking in acts of praise, thanksgiving, love, and reparation is doing on earth what the celestial liturgy performs before the throne. Hebrews 13:15 (the continual sacrifice of praise as the fruit of lips acknowledging the divine name) and the JSA-1 justice-catalog (March 27 — the eight forms of justice owed to the Creator as Creator) are the scriptural mandates whose active fulfillment the State Two soul embodies.
Romans 8:26–27 (the Spirit interceding through the soul’s activated participation) provides the pneumatological mechanism: when the divine leaves the partial void, the Spirit fills those parts with the intercession that the soul then voices as acts. The “trafficking” is not the soul’s solo performance but the Spirit’s intercession through her activated co-participation.
PCO-1 operates here in a different mode: the partial occupation (God leaves a few parts empty) produces the partial-communication state in which the soul’s own acts fill what the divine has left for her to fill. This is not a lesser form of State One but a different economy — the divine’s deliberate creative management of the interior space to produce the soul’s active love-expression.
Both States Sublime — The Economy of Contemplative and Active
“However, these two states are both sublime and hold each other’s hand.”
The explicit equivalence of the two states is the entry’s most formally significant single claim and the one Hogan underlines: “two aspects of the same mystery.” In the Western mystical tradition, the tension between the contemplative (Mary) and the active (Martha) modes has often been resolved in favor of the contemplative (Luke 10:42 — “Mary has chosen the better part”). May 16 does not make this resolution: both states are named as “sublime” — equally elevated, neither surpassing the other.
1 Corinthians 12:4–7 provides the doctrinal ground: “varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; varieties of service, but the same Lord; varieties of activities, but the same God who empowers them all in everyone.” The two states are varieties of the divine’s own activity through the soul — the idle-and-filled state and the active-and-trafficking state are both empowered by the same Spirit, aimed at the same Lord, produced by the same God.
John 15:4–5 (abiding in me produces much fruit) governs both: the total-filling is the abiding in its deepest receptive form; the partial-filling is the abiding in its active fruit-bearing form. The vine-and-branches image encompasses both — the branch in total abiding stillness and the branch in active fruit production are both the branch abiding in the vine. The fruit (State Two’s active acts) is precisely what the abiding (State One’s dissolution) makes possible.
April 29’s dual-obedience structure (interior obedience preserves the peace, exterior obedience keeps it) supplies the formation-arc context: the peace infused by the divine fire (April 29) is the condition from which both states emerge. State One is the peace at its most total; State Two is the peace actively overflowing into the justice-catalog acts. Both are “born of the whole of Christ” (WOC-1) — in State One, the Christ born within is present as the overwhelming fullness; in State Two, he is present as the active cause of the trafficking acts.
Synthesis
May 16 is the most formally systematic contemplative-theology entry in Volume 4’s spring 1902 sequence — a pure teaching on the two forms of mystical union with no intercessory, prophetic, or formative content beyond the teaching itself. Its architectural placement in the final sixth of Volume 4 is deliberate: after the formation arc has been summarized (April 29 — the whole-of-Christ born within), the two states of the formed soul’s ongoing union with the divine are named and their equal dignity affirmed.
The dominant biblical imagination is Contemplative-Sapiential-Liturgical. Psalm 131 (Hogan) and 2 Corinthians 12:2–4 govern State One; Revelation 4:8–11 and JSA-1 govern State Two; 1 Corinthians 12:4–7 and PCO-1 govern the mutual complementarity.
The two findings of highest theological significance: (1) the explicit equivalence of the two states — “both sublime and hold each other’s hand” — which formally refuses the traditional hierarchy of contemplative-over-active and names both as equally elevated forms of the divine-creaturely union; and (2) the intentional partial-filling of State Two — the divine’s deliberate creative choice to leave voids for the soul to fill with active love-acts — which reveals that the active-trafficking state is not a lesser version of the total-filling but a different economy in which the soul’s co-participation is the divine’s own creative design.

TSS-1 — Two Sublime States — new tracking item: May 16 introduces the corpus’s most formally systematic contemplative-theology teaching: two equally elevated states of mystical union — (1) total-filling/dissolution/idle (PCO-1’s total-communication form, governed by Psalm 131) and (2) partial-filling/active-trafficking in praise, thanksgiving, love, reparation (PCO-1’s active-participation form, governed by the JSA-1 justice-catalog). The explicit equivalence — “both sublime and hold each other’s hand” — formally refuses the traditional hierarchy of contemplative-over-active. The intentional partial-filling of State Two discloses that the active-trafficking state is the divine’s deliberate creative choice, not a lesser union. 1 Corinthians 12:4–7 (varieties, same Spirit) and PCO-1 govern the mutual complementarity. Monitor for further development of this two-state theology in higher volumes.
PCO-1 — two modes formally named: May 16 extends PCO-1 (March 23 — proportional communication to occupation) into its two operative modes. State One is PCO-1’s total-communication form: total occupation → total divine communication → dissolution. State Two is PCO-1’s active mode: the divine intentionally leaves partial void → partial communication → soul fills voids with active love-acts. The divine’s deliberate management of the interior space is a formally new disclosure of how PCO-1 operates.
