Volume 3 — April 25, 1900 “Purity in operating is light.”

STAGE ONE — INDEPENDENT BIBLICAL IDENTIFICATION

Finding Jesus with Mary: The Milk Exchange

“Finally I found Him in the arms of the Queen Mama, suckling milk from Her breasts… He came into my arms and poured from His mouth a little bit of that milk which He had suckled from the Queen Mama.”

Luke 11:27 — “It came to pass, as he said these things, a certain woman out of the multitude lifted up her voice and said to him, “Blessed is the womb that bore you, and the breasts which nursed you!” The nursing relationship between Mary and the infant Christ — “the breasts at which you nursed” — is the Gospel acknowledgment of the physical intimacy the entry describes. Jesus suckling from Mary is the Gospel reality; the milk passing from Mary through Jesus to Luisa is the extension of that nursing chain into the mystical. Type: affective/meditative

1 Peter 2:2 — “as newborn babies, long for the pure spiritual milk, that with it you may grow,” Already confirmed at February 20 for the spiritual-milk nursing. The milk flowing from Mary to Jesus to Luisa is the spiritual milk of 1 Peter 2:2: the pure nourishment that enables growth in salvation, passed through the chain Mary → Jesus → Luisa. The Marian dimension adds: the spiritual milk’s origin is the one who first received the Word incarnate. Type: direct doctrinal parallel

Song of Songs 8:1 — “Oh that you were like my brother, who nursed from the breasts of my mother! If I found you outside, I would kiss you; yes, and no one would despise me.” Already confirmed at January 6 and November 26 as ES-1’s Song of Songs anchor for the nursing exchange. The bride’s desire for the beloved to have shared the mother’s milk — and here Jesus giving Luisa the milk He has received from His own mother — is the Song’s mutual-nursing desire enacted in its most complete form. Type: affective/meditative

The Pearl of Purity: Purity of Operating as Light

“It is the purity of your suffering which, though small, is the cause of so much light, because you suffer only for love of Me… Purity in operating is so great, that one who operates with the sole purpose of pleasing Me alone, does nothing other than spread light from all of his operating.”

John 8:29 — “He who sent me is with me. The Father hasn’t left me alone, for I always do the things that are pleasing to him.” Hogan cites this explicitly. Already confirmed at February 26 for DW-SEED-3. “I always do the things that are pleasing to him” is the Christological form of purity in operating: the sole purpose of all Christ’s operating was to please the Father. Purity of intention is the creature’s participation in the Christological purity that John 8:29 names. Type: Christological/Trinitarian

John 3:19–21 — “This is the judgment, that the light has come into the world, and men loved the darkness rather than the light, for their works were evil. For everyone who does evil hates the light and doesn’t come to the light, lest his works would be exposed. But he who does the truth comes to the light, that his works may be revealed, that they have been done in God.” Hogan cites this explicitly. Already confirmed at February 12 for the voluntary-defects-as-clouds theology. The pure operator spreads light from all his operating (John 3:21: “his works have been carried out in God”); the impure operator spreads darkness even in good (John 3:19: “they loved darkness”). The purity-of-intention distinction is the Johannine judgment-theology applied to the soul’s interior motivation. Type: direct doctrinal parallel

Matthew 6:22–23 — “The lamp of the body is the eye. If therefore your eye is sound, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eye is evil, your whole body will be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in you is darkness, how great is the darkness!” The “lamp of the body” teaching is the most direct Gospel form of the April 25 principle: the pure eye (the single intention of love) fills the whole body with light; the bad eye (the mixed intention) fills it with darkness. The healthy eye operates “with the sole purpose of pleasing Me alone”; the bad eye has mixed motivations that darken the operating. Type: direct doctrinal parallel

Matthew 5:8 — “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.” Already confirmed at November 21 and December 21. The purity of heart — the undivided heart — is the interior condition from which purity of intention flows. The pure-in-heart who “shall see God” are those whose operating is pure: the single intention of love is the pure heart in its active form. Type: direct doctrinal parallel

POI-1 (Purity of Intention) primary Volume 3 activation: November 26 opened the POI-1 tracking item (the white-cross theology: voluntary + love of God + love of neighbor as the criterion for suffering’s quality). April 25 is POI-1’s most systematic Volume 3 doctrinal formulation: purity of intention (operating with the sole purpose of pleasing the divine) is named as the specific condition that transforms operating into light-spreading. POI-1 is no longer incidental but the explicit subject of the entry.

The Mirror in Christ’s Breast: Absorbed or Outside

“I looked into the breast of Our Lord, and He had a most clear mirror, and it seemed that those who walked in an upright way remained completely absorbed in that mirror, while those who did not, remained outside, without being able to receive any imprint of the image of blessed Jesus.”

2 Corinthians 3:18 (paraphrase) — Already confirmed throughout the volume. “Being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another.” The mirror in Christ’s breast is the April 24 Cross-mirror (the specific mirror that gives the divine likeness) now located in the divine’s own interior. Those who walk uprightly — with pure intention — are “completely absorbed in that mirror” and receive the imprint of the image; those who do not walk uprightly remain outside and receive no imprint. The transformation-through-beholding is conditioned by the purity of intention: the mixed-intention soul cannot enter the mirror. Type: direct doctrinal parallel

James 1:23–25 — “For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man looking at his natural face in a mirror; for he sees himself, and goes away, and immediately forgets what kind of man he was. But he who looks into the perfect law of freedom and continues, not being a hearer who forgets but a doer of the work, this man will be blessed in what he does.” The mirror image for the one who engages vs. the one who does not persevere — “remains outside” corresponds to the one who “looks and goes away and forgets.” The pure-intention operator perseveres in the mirror and receives the imprint; the impure operator cannot remain absorbed and therefore receives no imprint. Type: direct doctrinal parallel

Matthew 5:14–16 — “You are the light of the world. … let your light shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father who is in heaven.” The light that shines from the pure-intention operator’s works — “doing nothing other than spread light from all of his operating” — is the Matthew 5:14–16 light that glorifies the Father. The “good works” done for the Father’s glory are the works performed with the sole intention of pleasing Him; these spread light. Type: direct doctrinal parallel

STAGE TWO — COMPARISON WITH HOGAN’S COMMENTARY

CORRESPONDENCES

John 8:29 — Both identified. Hogan cites explicitly. Stage One confirms.

John 3:19–21 — Both identified. Hogan cites explicitly. Stage One confirms.

POI-1 (Purity of Intention) — Both analyses confirm this as the entry’s doctrinal subject. Hogan: “purity of intention — one reason for doing something, and the only intention accepted in the divine will spirituality is that you do everything for love of Jesus.”

Thérèse of Lisieux cross-reference — Hogan invokes Thérèse as the paradigm of purity of intention: “in the writings of St. Thérèse she continuously says she’s doing everything for love of Jesus alone.”

ADDITIONS — HERS

Thérèse of Lisieux as the paradigm of purity of intention: Hogan’s second Volume 3 invocation of Thérèse (the first being for confidence theology at January 31). Thérèse’s “for love of Jesus alone” is POI-1’s most concentrated hagiographical expression. The implicit scriptural ground is Matthew 22:37 (“love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind”) — the total love-directed intention as the single motivation for all operating.

The impurity-of-intention example (fasting while wishing to lose weight): Hogan’s most practically pointed pastoral illustration: the fasting with the mixed motivation of wanting to lose weight — “that thought in the back of my head makes the whole thing impure and of no value whatsoever, there’s poison in the intention.” The implicit scriptural ground is Matthew 6:2–5 (not letting the left hand know what the right hand does; not sounding a trumpet before giving alms; not praying to be seen by others). The mixed intention is the “trumpet-sounding” form: the action is good but the motivation is mixed, poisoning the whole.

“Those who don’t operate with purity receive no imprint of the image of blessed Jesus”: Hogan elevates this specifically: “if we’re doing stuff for ourselves or with mixed motivation, you don’t receive any imprint of the image of blessed Jesus — that’s frightening.” This is the mirror-in-the-breast teaching’s most pastorally urgent statement: the impure operator is excluded from the transformation.

VIP / SPECIAL DESIGNATIONS

No formal VIP designation. Hogan elevates the purity-of-intention principle with specific urgency — “you need to take that little statement, write it on the back of an old envelope, read it read it read it read it until it gets into you” — which is functionally elevating.

STAGE TWO SYNTHESIS

The entry presents POI-1’s most systematic Volume 3 formulation: purity of intention (operating with the sole purpose of pleasing the divine) transforms all operating into light-spreading and allows the soul to be absorbed in the mirror that gives the divine image. Both analyses converge on John 8:29 (Christ’s sole intention of pleasing the Father) and John 3:19–21 (the darkness/light judgment-theology). Stage One’s most significant additions are Matthew 6:22–23 (the lamp-of-the-body / healthy eye as the most direct Gospel form), Matthew 5:8 (the pure heart as the interior condition), 2 Corinthians 3:18 (the mirror-absorption’s transformation mechanism), and James 1:23–25 (the mirror that absorbs vs. the one who goes away). Hogan’s most significant additions are the Thérèse cross-reference and the concrete fasting-with-mixed-motive illustration.

Cross-Entry Synthesis

Volume 3 — April 25, 1900 “Purity in operating is light.”

CROSS-ENTRY SYNTHESIS

The Milk Exchange: Life Flowing Through the Chain

“He came into my arms and poured from His mouth a little bit of that milk which He had suckled from the Queen Mama.”

The nursing exchange — confirmed across January 6, February 19, February 20, and April 25 — here takes its most complete Marian form: the milk flows from Mary to Jesus to Luisa in a continuous chain of divine life. 1 Peter 2:2 (the spiritual milk that enables growth in salvation) and Song of Songs 8:1 (the bride’s desire for the beloved to have shared the mother’s milk) together establish the register. The chain is Trinitarian in its structure: the Father’s life flows through the Spirit to Mary (the Incarnation), through Mary to Jesus (the nursing), through Jesus to the victim soul (the mystical nursing). Each link in the chain passes what it received.

The Marian element is architecturally significant in the April arc: the entry comes the day after the “my eyes are wounded — they see my very image in you” declaration of April 24. The soul whose conformed image the divine has just declared beautiful is now shown receiving the life-milk from Jesus through Mary. The beauty of the image (April 24) and the nourishment that maintains it (April 25) are the fruit and the sustenance of the same transformation.

The Pearl of Purity: POI-1’s Systematic Formulation

“It is the purity of your suffering which, though small, is the cause of so much light, because you suffer only for love of Me… One who operates with the sole purpose of pleasing Me alone, does nothing other than spread light from all of his operating. One who does not operate in an upright way, even in good, does nothing other than spread darkness.”

POI-1 (Purity of Intention) opened at November 26 (the white-cross theology: voluntary + love of God + love of neighbor as the criterion for suffering’s quality) and was confirmed at December 21 (purity as the noblest gem) and February 13 (white-cross as the seal of purified suffering). April 25 is POI-1’s most systematic Volume 3 doctrinal formulation: purity of intention is not merely a quality of suffering but the specific condition that transforms all operating into light-spreading.

John 8:29 — confirmed by both analyses — is the Christological ground: “I always do the things that are pleasing to him.” Christ’s sole intention of pleasing the Father is the standard; the creature’s purity of intention is the creature’s participation in the Christological purity of John 8:29. The soul who operates with the sole purpose of pleasing the divine is operating in the Christological mode — which is the DW-SEED-3 formulation at its most precise: acting within the divine will means acting with the sole intention of pleasing the One whose will it is.

John 3:19–21 frames the binary: operating in pure intention carries out the works “in God” and spreads light; operating with mixed intention, even in good acts, spreads darkness. Matthew 6:22–23 names the interior condition: the healthy eye (the single intention) fills the whole body with light; the bad eye (the mixed intention) fills it with darkness. The April 16 binary (the two reigns — beatitude and restlessness) is here applied to the interior motivation: purity of intention is the beatitude-register operating; mixed intention is the restlessness-register operating, even in apparently good acts.

Hogan’s fasting-with-the-mixed-motive illustration is the most practically concrete statement of POI-1 in the volume: the single impure thought (“I could lose a few pounds”) poisons the entire act. The implicit Matthew 6:2–5 ground (the trumpet-sounding that empties the act of merit) applies: the mixed intention is the interior form of the trumpet-sounding — performing the act for self as well as for the divine renders it dark.

The Mirror in Christ’s Breast: Absorption or Exclusion

“Those who walked in an upright way remained completely absorbed in that mirror, while those who did not, remained outside, without being able to receive any imprint of the image of blessed Jesus.”

The mirror in Christ’s breast is the April 20 Cross-as-mirror and the April 24 image-confirmation internalized: the mirror is now located within the divine’s breast, and the pure-intention soul is absorbed into it. 2 Corinthians 3:18 (the transformation-through-beholding) names the mechanism: the absorbed soul is the soul receiving the ongoing imprint of the image; the outside soul receives no imprint because she cannot enter the mirror.

James 1:23–25 provides the structural parallel: the one who looks into the mirror and perseveres (the doer who acts) receives the blessing; the one who looks and immediately forgets (the hearer who does not act) receives nothing. The upright operator perseveres in the mirror; the impure operator cannot remain because the mixed intention is the internal obstacle that keeps the soul outside.

The connection to the April 24 declaration is precise: on April 24, the divine declared “my eyes see my very image in you” in the suffering soul. On April 25, the pure-intention operator is absorbed in the mirror that is in the divine’s breast. The two are the same reality from different angles: the divine’s eyes seeing the image in the soul (April 24) = the soul absorbed in the mirror of the divine’s breast (April 25). In both cases, the condition is the same: the pure-intention operator who has undergone the April sequence’s transformation.

POI-1 in the Volume’s Arc

The purity-of-intention teaching (POI-1) forms a continuous thread from November 26 (opened) through December 21 (confirmed as the noblest gem) through February 13 (the white-cross seal as POI-1’s criterion) through April 25 (the systematic formulation). The progression:

  • November 26: POI-1 opened — voluntary + love of God + love of neighbor = the criterion for suffering’s quality
  • December 21: Purity as the noblest gem that restores the divine image
  • February 13: The white-cross seal as the criterion for the fully purified suffering
  • April 25: Purity of intention as the condition that transforms ALL operating (not only suffering) into light-spreading

April 25 generalizes POI-1 from the specific context of suffering (November 26–February 13) to the entire domain of operating: every act performed with the sole intention of pleasing the divine spreads light; every act with mixed intention, even good acts, spreads darkness. The pearl is the condensed image of this generalized principle: small but radiating disproportionate light, because the purity is total.

Synthesis Conclusion

Dominant biblical imagination: The entry operates within the Johannine light-and-intention tradition (John 8:29, 3:19–21) for the purity-of-operating principle; the pure-heart Beatitude tradition (Matt 5:8, 6:22–23) for the interior condition; and the mirror-absorption tradition (2 Cor 3:18, Jas 1:23–25) for the transformation-through-purity.

Most load-bearing scriptural traditions: John 8:29 (Christ’s sole intention of pleasing the Father — the Christological ground and the creature’s paradigm), Matthew 6:22–23 (the lamp-of-the-body / the healthy eye — the most direct Gospel form of the purity-of-intention principle), and 2 Corinthians 3:18 (absorbed in the mirror / receiving the imprint — the transformation mechanism conditioned by purity).

Most theologically significant findings:

First, purity of intention is named as the specific condition that transforms all operating into light-spreading — generalizing from the suffering-specific POI-1 of November–February to the entire domain of human action. Every act, in every domain, spreads either light or darkness depending on whether the intention is pure or mixed. The pearl represents this: small (one human being, one small act) but radiating disproportionate light because the purity is total.

Second, the mirror-in-the-breast image is the April 20–24–25 sequence’s culminating image: the Cross is the mirror that gives the likeness (April 20); the divine recognizes the image in the suffering soul (April 24); the pure-intention soul is absorbed in the mirror within the divine’s breast and receives the imprint continuously (April 25). The three entries form a complete transformation-through-purity arc.

Third, John 8:29 as the Christological ground for purity of intention is DW-SEED-3’s most precise Volume 3 form: acting within the divine will means acting with the sole intention of pleasing the One whose will it is. The Christological purity of intention (John 8:29) and the DW-SEED-3 operative form (acting only to please God) are the same reality — the creature participating in what Christ did perfectly.

OBSERVATION NOTE

POI-1 — most systematic Volume 3 formulation: April 25 is POI-1’s primary Volume 3 reference. The principle is generalized from suffering-specific (November 26) to all operating: every act with pure intention spreads light; every act with mixed intention spreads darkness. DW-SEED-3 and POI-1 are confirmed as the same operative condition at different levels of articulation: DW-SEED-3 names acting within the divine will; POI-1 names the interior intention that constitutes such acting — the sole purpose of pleasing the divine.

April 20–24–25 transformation triptych: The Cross gives the divine likeness (April 20) → the divine recognizes the image in the suffering soul (April 24) → the pure-intention soul is absorbed in the mirror of the divine’s breast and continuously receives the imprint (April 25). The most concentrated transformation sequence in the volume.

Observation Notes

See this note in volume context →

03-1900-04-25

POI-1 most systematic Volume 3 formulation — April 25 is POI-1’s primary Volume 3 reference. Generalized from suffering-specific (November 26) to all operating: every act with pure intention spreads light; every act with mixed intention, even good acts, spreads darkness. DW-SEED-3 and POI-1 are confirmed as the same operative condition: DW-SEED-3 names acting within the divine will; POI-1 names the interior intention that constitutes such acting.

April 20–24–25 transformation triptych — the Cross gives the divine likeness (April 20) → the divine recognizes the image in the suffering soul (April 24) → the pure-intention soul is absorbed in the mirror within the divine’s breast (April 25). The most concentrated transformation sequence in the volume.

John 8:29 as DW-SEED-3’s most precise Volume 3 form — “I always do the things that are pleasing to him.” The creature’s purity of intention is participation in the Christological purity that the Father’s own Son enacted. DW-SEED-3 and John 8:29 are the same condition.

Hogan’s practical illustration — the fasting-with-the-weight-loss-thought is the volume’s most concrete application of POI-1: the single impure thought in the background poisons the whole act. Matthew 6:2–5 (the trumpet-sounding that empties the act of merit) is the implicit ground.

Note on FHC file — the commentary continues past April 25 into a separate entry beginning “so may the first 1900.” The May 1 content was not processed here; it awaits the May 1 diary file.
