Volume 3 — February 12, 1900 “Voluntary defects form clouds.”

STAGE ONE — INDEPENDENT BIBLICAL IDENTIFICATION

The Anointing Hand: The Lamp-Dipped Finger

“I only saw one hand clearly, which seemed to carry a lamp which was lit. He dipped His finger in the lamp and anointed the area of my heart, embittered to the summit by the pain of His privation.”

Exodus 29:7; Leviticus 8:12 (paraphrase) — The anointing with oil as the priestly and kingly consecration act — the finger dipped and applied — has its OT liturgical ground in the anointing of Aaron and the consecration of the sanctuary. The lamp-oil anointing applied to the heart is a priestly act: Christ anoints the afflicted heart with the oil of the truth-lamp, consecrating the suffering interior to the reception of what follows. Type: typological

Psalm 23:5 — “You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil. My cup runs over.” The anointing in the context of the table prepared in the presence of enemies — the shepherd-king’s ministry to the soul in its time of trial — is the Psalmic form of the lamp-anointing. The heart “embittered to the summit” is the cup of sorrow being met by the divine anointing that overflows it with the oil of consolation. Type: affective/meditative

Isaiah 61:1 — “The Lord GOD’s Spirit is on me, because the LORD has anointed me to preach good news to the humble. He has sent me to bind up the broken hearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and release to those who are bound,” The anointed one who binds up the brokenhearted is the Christological ground for the entry’s anointing action: Christ the anointed (Messiah/Christ = anointed one) comes to the crushed heart and applies the oil of truth’s light. Type: Christological/Trinitarian

Truth as Light: The Sun-and-Cloud Theology

“The truth is light, which the Word brought upon earth… Even though many clouds obfuscate this light of truth, which are the iniquities of men… And if these clouds are clouds of imperfection and of involuntary defects, this light, piercing them with its heat, makes them vanish and it penetrates freely into the soul.”

John 1:4–5, 9 — “In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness hasn’t overcome it. The true light that enlightens everyone was coming into the world.” Hogan cites this (as John 1:4–5). The Word as the true light that illuminates, vivifies, and fecundates — “the Word brought upon earth” the light of truth — is the Johannine identification of Christ as the cosmic sun. The sun-analogy the entry uses has its scriptural ground in John 1’s light-of-the-world Christology. Type: Christological/Trinitarian

1 John 1:5 — “This is the message which we have heard from him and announce to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.” Hogan cites this explicitly. The corpus’s most recurring passage (confirmed throughout the entire project). Here it grounds the identification of truth with light and light with God: the truth that is light is the God who is light. The iniquities that form clouds do not change what God is; they only block the creature’s reception of what He is. Type: direct doctrinal parallel

John 14:6 — “Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me.” Hogan cites this explicitly. The Word who brought truth upon earth is the one who is Truth — the circle-of-truth teaching from February 5 is here confirmed in its Christological ground: the truth that the soul must remain within is the Person of Christ. Type: Christological/Trinitarian

John 8:12 — “Again, therefore, Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. He who follows me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the light of life.” The light of the world — the sun-analogy’s Christological identity — is confirmed: the divine sun whose light the clouds of voluntary sin obstruct is the Christ who declares Himself the light of the world. Not following (voluntary sin) is the cloud. Type: Christological/Trinitarian

Isaiah 59:2 — “But your iniquities have separated you and your God, and your sins have hidden his face from you, so that he will not hear.” The cloud-of-iniquity as the obstruction of the divine light is the Isaian prophetic form. The entry’s “many clouds obfuscate this light of truth, which are the iniquities of men” is Isaiah 59:2’s imagery of sin-as-separation translated into the light-and-cloud metaphor. Type: direct doctrinal parallel

Isaiah 44:22 — “I have blotted out, as a thick cloud, your transgressions, and, as a cloud, your sins. Return to me, for I have redeemed you.” The divine’s own description of iniquities as clouds — which He blots out like a cloud — is the OT prophetic form of the entry’s cloud theology. The involuntary defects that the light’s heat makes vanish correspond to the cloud-blotting of this verse: the light-heat is the redemptive act that the Isaian oracle names. Type: typological

Malachi 4:2 — “But to you who fear my name shall the sun of righteousness arise with healing in its wings. You will go out and leap like calves of the stall.” The sun of righteousness whose rising produces healing is the OT prophetic type for the entry’s sun-analogy: the divine sun that illuminates, vivifies, and fecundates the soul is the Malachi sun of righteousness whose healing rays penetrate even through the clouds. Type: typological

Voluntary Defects as the Dangerous Clouds

“The soul must be attentive not to fall even into a shade of voluntary defects, which are those dangerous clouds that prevent the entrance of divine light.”

Hebrews 12:14 — “Follow after peace with all men, and the sanctification without which no man will see the Lord,” Hogan cites this explicitly. Already confirmed at November 4, December 21, and January 31 as the threshold-holiness principle. Here it is applied to the cloud-theology: voluntary defects are the clouds that prevent the soul from seeing the Lord — not because the Lord ceases to shine but because the clouds block the soul’s capacity to receive the light. Type: direct doctrinal parallel

Revelation 21:27 — “There will in no way enter into it anything profane, or one who causes an abomination or a lie, but only those who are written in the Lamb’s book of life.” Hogan cites this explicitly. Already confirmed at December 21 for the divine-as-receptacle-of-pure-souls teaching. Here the voluntary defects are the specific form of the unclean that cannot enter: the dangerous clouds that prevent the divine light’s entrance on earth correspond to the unclean that cannot enter the New Jerusalem. Type: direct doctrinal parallel

John 3:19–21 — “This is the judgment, that the light has come into the world, and men loved the darkness rather than the light, for their works were evil. For everyone who does evil hates the light and doesn’t come to the light, lest his works would be exposed. But he who does the truth comes to the light, that his works may be revealed, that they have been done in God.” The Johannine judgment-theology of light and darkness is the most direct scriptural expression of the cloud-theology: the voluntary choice of darkness (voluntary defects) is the self-imposed obstruction of the light. The “shade of voluntary defects” is the soul’s choosing to draw the cloud over herself by choosing what opposes the light. Type: direct doctrinal parallel

Ephesians 5:11–14 — “Have no fellowship with the unfruitful deeds of darkness, but rather even reprove them. For it is a shame even to speak of the things which are done by them in secret. But all things, when they are reproved, are revealed by the light, for everything that reveals is light. Therefore he says, “Awake, you who sleep, and arise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.” The light that exposes and transforms — “Christ will shine on you” — is the Pauline form of the entry’s teaching: the light that pierces the involuntary-defect clouds and makes them vanish is the same light that calls the sleeper to arise. The voluntary defect-clouds resist precisely this awakening. Type: direct doctrinal parallel

1 John 1:6–7 — “If we say that we have fellowship with him and walk in the darkness, we lie and don’t tell the truth. But if we walk in the light as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanses us from all sin.” The walking-in-the-light vs. walking-in-the-darkness is the Johannine form of the voluntary-defect distinction: the soul who deliberately chooses voluntary defects is the soul who walks in darkness while claiming fellowship with the One who is light. First John 1:7’s cleansing from all sin is available to the soul who walks in the light — corresponding to the involuntary defects that the light-heat makes vanish. Type: direct doctrinal parallel

STAGE TWO — COMPARISON WITH HOGAN’S COMMENTARY

CORRESPONDENCES

John 1:4–5 — Both identified. Hogan cites explicitly for the Word as the light of life. Stage One confirms it.

1 John 1:5 — Both identified. Hogan cites explicitly. Stage One confirms it as the governing light-identification.

John 14:6 — Both identified. Hogan cites explicitly. Stage One confirms it.

Hebrews 12:14 — Both identified. Hogan cites explicitly. Stage One confirms it as the threshold-holiness principle.

Revelation 21:27 — Both identified. Hogan cites explicitly. Stage One confirms it.

The voluntary/involuntary distinction — Both analyses confirm this as the entry’s operative doctrinal distinction: voluntary defects = dangerous cloud blocking the light; involuntary defects = cloud the light-heat dissolves. Both analyses confirm the January 31 echo (Hogan’s earlier treatment of the same distinction).

DEVIATIONS

ADDITIONS — HERS

“Very important message” — elevated designation: Hogan opens: “a very important message and it is that voluntary sin is a huge block — you’re not going anywhere with the divine will in this.” This is the entry’s functional VIP designation, specifically elevating the voluntary-defect-as-cloud teaching as structurally critical for the divine will spirituality. The pastoral urgency is identical to the January 27 forward bridge: the divine will cannot operate in a soul blocked by voluntary sin.

New Jerusalem application: Hogan applies Revelation 21:27 specifically to the Kingdom of the Divine Will: “when the New Jerusalem is established on the earth, only those in the will of God are in the New Jerusalem, and all others are outside.” This is the entry’s most eschatological forward bridge, identifying the cloud-free soul as the soul within the New Jerusalem — and connecting the voluntary-defect cloud teaching directly to the Kingdom of the Divine Will’s entry conditions.

VIP / SPECIAL DESIGNATIONS

Hogan designates this entry as “a very important message” — not the formal VIP triple-elevation but functionally equivalent. The content she elevates is the voluntary sin as a block to the divine will: “you’re not going anywhere with the divine will in this.” This is the DW-SEED preparation arc’s most explicit prohibition: voluntary sin is the structural disqualification from the divine will spirituality.

STAGE TWO SYNTHESIS

The entry presents the light-and-cloud theology as the doctrinal framework for the voluntary/involuntary defect distinction. Both analyses converge on John 1:4–5, 1 John 1:5, John 14:6, Hebrews 12:14, and Revelation 21:27. Hogan’s most significant additions are the “very important message” elevation and the New Jerusalem application identifying the cloud-free soul as the divine-will inhabitant. Stage One’s most significant additions are the Johannine judgment-theology (John 3:19–21), the Ephesians 5 sleeper-and-light passage, and the OT cloud-removal typology (Isa 44:22, Mal 4:2).

Cross-Entry Synthesis

Volume 3 — February 12, 1900 “Voluntary defects form clouds.”

CROSS-ENTRY SYNTHESIS

The Anointing Hand

“He dipped His finger in the lamp and anointed the area of my heart, embittered to the summit by the pain of His privation.”

The entry opens with a priestly act: Christ’s finger dipped in the lamp-oil and applied to the crushed heart. Isaiah 61:1 grounds it Christologically — “the Lord has anointed me to bind up the brokenhearted” — and Psalm 23:5 provides the pastoral-royal form: “you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.” The lamp is the divine truth whose light the entry will develop; the anointing applies that truth directly to the suffering interior before the teaching begins. The act precedes the word: before the doctrine of voluntary clouds, the heart is consoled.

Truth as Light: The Sun and the Clouds

“The truth is light, which the Word brought upon earth. Just as the sun illuminates, vivifies and fecundates the earth, so does the light of truth give life and light… Even though many clouds obfuscate this light of truth, which are the iniquities of men.”

Both analyses confirm John 1:4–5 (the Word as the light of life), 1 John 1:5 (God is light), and John 14:6 (Christ is truth) as the governing Christological triad. Together they establish that the “light of truth” the entry describes is not an abstraction but a Person: the Word who is Truth, who is Light, who gives life to the world. The sun-analogy is not merely illustrative but theologically precise: the divine is the cosmic source of light, and the soul’s reception of that light depends on the clarity of the interior atmosphere.

The cloud-theology resolves the January 31 / February 5 nothingness-and-truth sequence into a visual image: the soul whose interior is free of voluntary defects is the soul under clear skies — the full light of Truth penetrating freely. The soul with voluntary defects has pulled clouds over herself that block the very light she needs.

Isaiah 59:2 (“your iniquities have made a separation between you and your God”) and Isaiah 44:22 (“I have blotted out your transgressions like a cloud”) provide the OT prophetic frame: iniquity as cloud is the Isaian image predating the entry’s usage. That God blots out transgressions “like a cloud” (Isa 44:22) establishes that the cloud-removal is a divine redemptive act, not only a creaturely effort. The light’s heat that makes involuntary clouds vanish (the entry) corresponds to the divine cloud-blotting of Isaiah 44.

Malachi 4:2 (the sun of righteousness rising with healing in its wings) provides the eschatological form: the full unobstructed light is the eschatological condition toward which the cloud-free soul advances.

The Voluntary/Involuntary Distinction: The Entry’s Operative Teaching

“If these clouds are clouds of imperfection and of involuntary defects, this light, piercing them with its heat, makes them vanish and it penetrates freely into the soul. The soul must be attentive not to fall even into a shade of voluntary defects, which are those dangerous clouds that prevent the entrance of divine light.”

Both analyses confirm this as the entry’s operative doctrinal distinction, and Hogan’s “very important message” elevation confirms its structural weight. The distinction: involuntary defects are penetrable by the light’s heat — the light dissolves them from outside, requiring no special effort from the soul beyond the openness that the January 27–31 arc established. Voluntary defects are impenetrable clouds — they are not dissolved by the light’s heat because the soul has deliberately chosen them, and they constitute a refusal of the light rather than an inadequacy before it.

Hebrews 12:14 and Revelation 21:27 — confirmed by both analyses — frame the distinction eschatologically: “the holiness without which no one will see the Lord” (Heb 12:14) and “nothing unclean will ever enter [the New Jerusalem]” (Rev 21:27). Hogan applies the Revelation 21:27 text specifically to the Kingdom of the Divine Will: “when the New Jerusalem is established on the earth, only those in the will of God are in the New Jerusalem.” The cloud-free soul is the New Jerusalem inhabitant; the voluntary-defect cloud blocks both the divine will’s operation now and the New Jerusalem’s entry eschatologically.

John 3:19–21 provides the Johannine judgment-theology form: “people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil.” The voluntary defect is the deliberate preference for the darkness — not merely stumbling into the cloud but choosing to draw it over oneself. The “shade of voluntary defect” is the first step of this deliberate turning away from the light, not yet the dense cloud of habitual grave sin but the first shadow that begins to obstruct.

First John 1:6–7 names the cleansing available to the one who walks in the light: “the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.” The involuntary defects that the light dissolves are exactly what 1 John 1:7 names as cleansed — the ongoing process of purification available to the soul who walks in the light. The voluntary defects interrupt the walking-in-the-light and therefore interrupt the cleansing.

The Entry in the Volume’s Preparatory Arc

The February 12 entry is the preparatory arc’s most explicit prohibitive statement. The January 27 entry showed the disordered rooms needing the January 28 mortification-fire for clearing. The January 31 entry named correspondence to grace and nothingness as the positive preconditions. The February 4–5 entries named discouragement as the adversary of confidence. The February 12 entry names voluntary sin as the cloud that makes the entire preceding work moot: a soul who has ordered the apartments (January 27), applied mortification (January 28), entered the grace-chain (January 31), and overcome discouragement (February 4–5) but then falls into voluntary defects has drawn the clouds back over herself. The preparatory arc requires not only the positive work but the sustained avoidance of what undoes it.

Hogan’s pastoral urgency — “you’re not going anywhere with the divine will in this” — and the NSP-1 / DW-SEED-3 / CON-1 connections across the preceding entries converge here: the soul who has received the grace of nothingness, the grace of confidence, and the grace of ordered virtue cannot advance in the divine will spirituality if she simultaneously permits voluntary defects. The cloud is the structural barrier.

Synthesis Conclusion

Dominant biblical imagination: The Johannine light-and-darkness tradition (John 1:4–5, 1 John 1:5–7, John 3:19–21, John 8:12) governs the entry’s cloud-theology; the Isaian prophetic-iniquity-as-separation tradition (Isa 59:2, 44:22) provides the OT typological ground; and Hebrews 12:14 / Revelation 21:27 provide the threshold and eschatological forms.

Most load-bearing scriptural traditions: 1 John 1:5 (God is light — the absolute light-identification governing the entire cloud theology), John 3:19–21 (the Johannine judgment-theology of voluntary darkness as the choice against the light), and Revelation 21:27 (the New Jerusalem entry-condition as the eschatological form of the voluntary-defect cloud’s consequence).

Most theologically significant findings:

First, the voluntary/involuntary distinction is the entry’s most practically operative doctrinal contribution: involuntary defects are dissolved by the light’s heat without requiring the soul’s effort; voluntary defects are not dissolved because they are chosen refusals of the light. This distinction has immediate practical implications for the DW-SEED preparation arc: the soul need not be paralyzed by inadvertent failures (the light dissolves these), but must be actively attentive against deliberate choices of what opposes the divine light.

Second, Hogan’s New Jerusalem application of Revelation 21:27 is the entry’s most eschatologically significant addition: the voluntary-defect cloud that blocks the divine light now also blocks entry into the New Jerusalem that Hogan has identified as the Kingdom of the Divine Will’s eschatological realization. The preparatory arc’s entire program — ordered apartments, mortification, nothingness, confidence — leads toward New Jerusalem inhabitance; voluntary defects are the one thing that structurally prevents it.

Third, the entry’s light-and-cloud theology integrates November 4’s discernment teaching (the divine nature as pure virtue; evil cannot dwell with God), November 19’s pride-as-smoke entry (pride produces blindness = clouds producing darkness), and December 22’s Trinitarian light-manifestation (the light Hogan identified as the divine will) into a single visual: the soul’s interior sky, clear or clouded, determines the divine light’s freedom to operate. The entire moral arc of the volume — from the discernment of November 4 through the mortification of January 28 — is the work of keeping the interior sky clear.

OBSERVATION NOTE

VIP-designated content: Hogan’s “a very important message — voluntary sin is a huge block, you’re not going anywhere with the divine will in this” elevates the voluntary-defect-as-cloud teaching as structurally critical. This is the DW-SEED preparation arc’s most explicit prohibitive statement. The voluntary defect blocks what the January 27–February 5 arc established positively. Both the positive preconditions (ordered interior, mortification, nothingness, confidence) and the negative prohibitions (no voluntary defects) are now complete.

DW-SEED preparation arc — structural prohibition confirmed: February 12 is the arc’s explicit negative boundary: the soul may pursue all the positive preparatory work (January 27–31, February 4–5) but must simultaneously avoid voluntary defects, which form the clouds that prevent the divine light/divine will from operating freely. The arc is now complete in both its positive and its negative dimensions.

New Jerusalem / Kingdom of the Divine Will eschatological connection: Hogan’s application of Revelation 21:27 to the Kingdom of the Divine Will — “only those in the will of God are in the New Jerusalem” — is the volume’s most explicit eschatological identification of the divine will spirituality with the Apocalypse’s final vision. Track this as a new connection between DW-SEED-1 (divine will omnipresence) and the eschatological New Jerusalem.

03-1900-02-12

VIP-designated content — Hogan’s “a very important message — voluntary sin is a huge block, you’re not going anywhere with the divine will in this” is the DW-SEED preparation arc’s most explicit structural prohibition.

DW-SEED preparation arc — now complete in both dimensions: Positive (January 27–31: ordered interior, mortification, nothingness, grace-chain; February 4–5: overcoming discouragement through confidence) + Negative (February 12: no voluntary defects, which form the clouds that block the divine light/will). The arc that opened at January 27 is now structurally complete.

New Jerusalem / Kingdom of the Divine Will eschatological connection — Hogan’s Revelation 21:27 application: “when the New Jerusalem is established on the earth, only those in the will of God are in the New Jerusalem.” The cloud-free soul is the New Jerusalem inhabitant. This is a new eschatological connection between the divine will spirituality and the Apocalypse’s final vision.

1 John 1:5 count — another Volume 3 deployment of the corpus’s most recurring passage, here as the governing light-identification for the cloud-theology. The entry integrates the entire moral arc of the volume (November 4 discernment → November 19 pride → January 31 nothingness → February 12 voluntary-cloud prohibition) under the single image of the soul’s interior sky: clear or clouded.
